Common Examples of Quid Pro Quo Sexual Harassment

AUGUST 11, 2025 – According to the National Institute of Health, sexual harassment is still present in workplaces. These unsolicited sexual advances infringe upon your human rights to safety and welfare.

One example of sexual harassment is quid pro quo. It happens when a person seeks sexual favors for either promotion or threatened job stability if the request is not fulfilled.

Any form of sexual harassment diminishes your dignity and makes the workplace hostile to you.

Let us find out the different examples of quid pro quo harassment in the workplace that you need to watch out for.

Offering Promotions for Sexual Favors

When somebody offers a promotion in exchange for sex, this is a serious workplace offense. Quid pro quo harassment violates your professional integrity and establishes a toxic environment.

Under such circumstances, you must remember to protect yourself. You should always exercise your rights. Don’t put your safety at risk just to get that job promotion.

If you are experiencing harassment, contact your HR department or management.

Conditioning Job Security on Sexual Compliance

Job security should never depend on sexual compliance. There are co-workers who will insist that you bring them to bed and threaten you with losing your job if you don’t comply.

If someone makes you do something sexual against your will or someone forces you into it, immediately report it to your supervisor, management, or human resources. It is your right to have a workplace free from any type of coerced environment.

Requesting Sexual Gratification for Favorable Evaluations

If situations arise in which a person in authority asks for sexual favors in the hope of getting positive performance evaluations, such an environment would be in itself toxic toward professional integrity.

This kind of quid pro quo harassment might result in feelings of entrapment. Individuals feel they need to engage in an unwanted sexual act because they associate it with not losing the job or getting a better position.

When this situation extends itself to the colleagues, it will cause a lack of trust that gives rise to animosity that divides and makes the work atmosphere uncomfortable for them.

Imposing Unwanted Advances in Exchange for Benefits

You might think that special workplace benefits are based solely on merit, but some people might see these benefits as improper attempts at providing promotions, raises, or other perks in return for sexual advances.

If you are coerced to engage in every undesirable act for fear of losing a reward, your dignity as an employee is being stripped away from you, and this counts as sexual harassment.

Promising Raises in Return for Sexual Engagement

An exploitative situation arises when someone in power coaxes an employee to trade sex for a raise. It is normal for workers to have a desire to advance their careers. That is why some people fall victim to certain cases of predatory behavior. You risk putting your career in jeopardy if you comply with these illicit sexual advances.

You need to document everything and report it to HR if necessary or seek legal help. Always choose yourself, your safety and your welfare. You shouldn’t have to choose between your job and your integrity.

Leveraging Authority to Solicit Sexual Acts

This sort of harassment manifests if a supervisor or manager manipulates subordinates into some form of sexual activity or conduct. They might create a hostile environment by stating that cooperating would result in positive treatment from them. That kind of conduct is worth standing against, as it preys on individuals who are susceptible.

Everyone deserves to feel secure and respected, free from coercion or manipulation. Stand firm against such abuses of power and don’t let this cycle be repeated to someone else. Such an environment is important for your career and even more so for your well-being.

Sexual harassment is a serious violation that undermines the sanctity and safety of the workplace. You should act if this is happening to you or someone you know. Creating a healthier work culture can be done by working with others in resolving this problem.
