Kitsap Barracks Renovation Marks First Completed Project

AUGUST 28, 2026 – Following the complete installation of new furnishings, renovated living quarters at Naval Base Kitsap-Bremerton (NBK-Bremerton) are ready for Sailors to move in. The milestone marks the first of the Navy’s six major sustainment, restoration, and modernization projects funded through the Barracks Task Force to reach completion, directly advancing the Navy’s “No Sailor Living Afloat” initiative – a drive to move Sailors off docked ships and into high-quality shore housing – and Commander, Navy Installations Command’s (CNIC) Quality of Service improvement efforts.

“Quality of service is inseparable from readiness,” said Vice Adm. Scott Gray, commander of Navy Installations Command. “Providing safe, comfortable, and clean housing is a responsibility we owe to every Sailor who volunteers to serve. Completing this project at Kitsap is an important step in a much larger, multiyear effort to improve unaccompanied housing across the Navy.”

The full-scale interior renovation of the 10-story, 152-room building delivers 304 new beds and revitalizes the facility following fire and water damage sustained in August 2025. Naval Facilities Engineering Systems Command (NAVFAC) Northwest completed structural repairs on an accelerated timeline, passing final inspection in April 2026 – 30 days ahead of schedule – before outfitting the entire facility with new furnishings and window coverings.

“Completing a project of this scope ahead of schedule is a direct result of strong teamwork between our installation, region, and engineering partners,” said Capt. Alex Baerg, Naval Base Kitsap commanding officer. “This milestone proves that with clear priorities and focused investment, we can rapidly revitalize our shore facilities and deliver lasting improvements across the Navy.”

Beyond complete living area refurbishment, water intrusion remediation, and structural safety upgrades, the project revitalized common areas with dedicated recreation and community lounges on every floor. These amenities provide diverse spaces for service members to relax and connect, featuring a pool and foosball area on the first floor; electronic gaming rooms on floors two and nine; theater rooms on the third and eighth floors; a tabletop gaming lounge on the fourth floor; dedicated wellness spaces including a yoga studio on the fifth floor and a “Zen Den” library on the sixth floor; and arcades on the seventh and tenth floors.

The $12.1 million renovation at NBK-Bremerton is part of a broader, multiyear investment from the Secretary of War’s Barracks Task Force to provide clean, comfortable, and safe Unaccompanied Housing (UH). Across the Shore Enterprise, CNIC is spending approximately $375 million from the One Big Beautiful Bill to modernize barracks, combining major structural overhauls, routine maintenance standards, and tailored quality-of-life improvements.

From expedited contract awards and early construction delivery to final interior outfitting, the NBK-Bremerton UH project establishes a benchmark for upcoming barracks enhancements across the Fleet.

“This project sets a high standard for how we modernize our shore infrastructure through strong collaboration, accountability, and targeted investments,” Baerg said. “By addressing critical facility needs directly, we are providing our Sailors with the high-quality spaces they deserve to live, recharge, and remain focused on their operational mission.”
