Mrs. Obama visited Oceana Naval Air Station on Thursday as part of her “Joining Forces” initiative, which aims to support military families.
She toured a summer camp for military kids and then welcomed military families to a free screening of the new Harry Potter movie at the base’s theater.
At 10:20 a.m. Mrs. Obama began a brief visit with campers who were painting sets for an upcoming production of “Annie.” She was greeted by 9-year-old Macy Morgan. Macy helped Mrs. Obama put on an apron, and then they sat down to paint.
The pool was ushered out after about five minutes to a nearby classroom, where about thirty 5- and 6-year-olds were waiting for Mrs. Obama. She arrived at 10:50 and was greeted by 6-year-old Dakota Tillard. Mrs. Obama danced briefly with the kids to help them get the wiggles out. Then they sat while she read them the children’s book Where the Wild Things Are. “This is one of the president’s favorite books,” she told the kids.
At 11:05, Mrs. Obama moved to a nearby gymnasium, where she watched another group of a few dozen kids practice for the upcoming “Annie” production. They sang and danced to the song, It’s a Hard-Knock Life.
The pool was ushered out at 11:10, concluding the pool portion of the event.
