Why a Handgun Safe Matters for Veterans

JUNE 2, 2025 – For many veterans, possessing a firearm is second nature. After years of military duty, firearms may represent security, control, and readiness. However, when military duty ends, the transition back to civilian life frequently presents distinct mental health issues. This makes proper gun ownership more crucial than ever. One essential step toward firearm safety is investing in a handgun safe.

Why Veterans Need a Handgun Safe

According to the US Department of Veterans Affairs, approximately 70% of veteran suicides involve the use of firearms. This devastating figure emphasizes the critical need for secure handgun storage. A handgun safe acts as a key barrier between a person in crisis and a loaded weapon. It could potentially save lives. Using a handgun safe does not imply reducing rights. It is about saving lives and increasing safety.

Suicide prevention is one of the most essential reasons why veterans should utilize a handgun safe. Veterans may develop post-service stress, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression, or emotional breakdowns. In those situations, instant access to a firearm can result in irreversible actions.  Locking a pistol in safe delays access and gives time for the crisis to pass. That minute could save someone’s life.

Reducing Accidental Injuries and Legal Risks

A handgun safe is also necessary for avoiding unintentional injury. Many veterans live with children, elderly parents, or other people who may be unaware of the risks associated with firearms. Keeping a pistol unlocked and within reach can lead to disaster.  A secure handgun safe keeps the firearm out of harm’s way.

Safe firearm storage also assures adherence to local laws. Many jurisdictions now mandate that weapons be stored in a lockable container.  A handgun safe helps veterans achieve their legal requirements. Even in locations lacking tight storage requirements, using a handgun safe demonstrates a strong commitment to proper firearm ownership.

Supporting Mental Health and Family Well-Being

Veterans are extensively trained to handle firearms. However, after service, familiarity, combined with stress or trauma, can heighten the risk of self-harm. A handgun safe adds a layer of security by preventing immediate access and promoting prudent behavior.

Storing a firearm properly can also bring peace of mind. Veterans with anxiety or emotional health concerns may feel more at rest knowing their firearm is safely kept. Family members will feel safer knowing that precautions have been taken to lessen the likelihood of harm. A handgun safe benefits not just the veteran, but also their family members.

What to Look for in a Handgun Safe

Choosing the appropriate handgun safe is critical. First, seek a model that is both secure and accessible in an emergency.  Biometric safes which use fingerprint identification, and electronic keypad safes are both excellent options for speedy entry.

The materials utilized to manufacture the safe are also important. To ensure longevity, choose a handgun safe made from robust metals and high-quality bolts.  Make sure the size accommodates both your storage space and your handgun.  Finally, choose a safe that fits your budget. There are choices available for any financial position.

Langger Safe manufactures high-quality handgun safes that veterans rely on. Their models are developed with security and accessibility in mind, providing peace of mind without sacrificing functionality.

Encouraging Safe Practices in the Community

Veterans are not alone on this journey. Family members, friends, and healthcare providers all have a role to play in encouraging safe storage. Talking openly about mental health and the importance of using a handgun safe should become as common as discussing home safety or emergency preparedness.

Communities can normalize safe storage by:

  • Starting conversations during checkups or events.
  • Sharing resources on storage options.
  • Encouraging regular reviews of storage practices.

A Commitment to Safety

Securing a firearm is more than a personal preference. Using a handgun safe demonstrates a veteran’s commitment to safety, accountability, and mental health. It protects the individual, their family, and the larger community.

A handgun safe does not restrict freedom. Instead, it provides an essential layer of security and peace of mind.  One of the most critical measures any veteran who owns a handgun can take is to prioritize safe storage.
