Cyber-Warfare and a New Model for Leadership

FEBRUARY 1, 2023 — Special ops veteran offers unconventional approach to gaining competitive edge.

Sometimes the best way to win — in battle, in business or in life — requires breaking the rules. Nobody understands this better than Bronze Star Medal and Purple Heart recipient Jeffrey Engle. In All the War They Want: Special Operations Techniques for Winning in Cyber Warfare, Business, and Life (Greenleaf Book Group Press, Jan. 10, 2023), Engle, the president of Conquest Cyber, presents counterintuitive problem-solving techniques that defy convention and reframe what it means to lead.

“How teams are built and led is not a science but an art based on personal experiences,” said David Henshall, former president and CEO of Citrix Systems. “After watching how Jeff has built and led his team, inspired by his service in special ops — and how he strives to rally all of us to his critical cause of defending America in cyberspace — I believe him to be an artist of the highest order. Unconventional, creative and a rule-breaker in the best sense of the term — that’s Jeff Engle.”

Informed by Engle’s experience as a member of the U.S. military’s elite special ops community, his Brazilian jiu-jitsu training, and his leadership of a premier cyber-defense company, All the War They Want offers an alternative perspective on overcoming tough leadership challenges — a perspective previously available only to those bearing the scars of a lifetime at war.

Engle shows readers which rules and conventions to break to stack the deck in their favor, providing a competitive edge in both personal and professional life. Engle offers insights on:

  • the current state of cybersecurity (or lack thereof) in America, including a sketch of the adversary and what they hope to achieve;
  • how to connect people to your mission, especially when they do not fully understand what it is you are doing;
  • the one characteristic to look for when choosing people for your elite team — and why “passion” isn’t it;
  • the true origin of your organization’s brand;
  • the rationale for not letting your people get too comfortable and
  • the most effective way to hold people accountable.

“There is a war raging against our way of life,” Engle says. “That’s why I advocate for a different approach to problem-solving — an approach grounded in special operations principles. This book is a call to action, both for the individuals focused directly on cybersecurity challenges and the broader society. We need to rejuvenate the fighting spirit that has made the United States a global leader. Having something you believe in so much that you wake up and fight for it every day — that is what makes up the fabric of the country I have spent my entire adult life defending.”

Pick up your copy of All the War They Want and stay updated on Jeffrey Engle’s endeavors by listening to the All the War They Want podcast or visiting conquestcyber.com.
