AUGUST 29, 2021 – It is with a heavy heart we confirm one Soldier died as a result of the attack in Kabul yesterday. No further information will be released until 24-hours after next of kin notification is complete.

Statement from Secretary of the Army, Honorable Christine E. Wormuth.

“My heart goes out to the families and friends of the victims of the terrible, cowardly attacks in Kabul. I join all of my fellow DoD leaders in honoring our Service Members’ sacrifice–they gave all for others. Our Army mourns the loss of our Soldier and we are here to support his family and friends. His fellow Soldiers, Sailors, Marines, & Airmen continue their brave mission.”

Statement from Chief of Staff of the Army, Gen. James C. McConville.

“I am heart-broken by the appalling attacks in Kabul and offer my sincere condolences to the families of the victims. These fallen Service Members died ensuring that others might live. They represent the very best of America, and we continue this mission in their honor.”

Statement by Secretary of Defense Lloyd J. Austin III

A solemn honor to attend today’s dignified transfer ceremony of the 13 U.S service members who lost their lives outside Hamid Karzai International Airport in Kabul, Afghanistan on August 26th.

These men and women made the ultimate sacrifice so that others could live. They were and will be forever remembered as heroes.

My heart and my thoughts are with their families, especially today. They, too, have made the ultimate sacrifice.
