Should You Consider Trade School After Leaving Military Service?

JULY 11, 2023 – No matter how long you were in the service of the armed forces for your country, no matter what you did, or what you saw whenever you were in the armed forces, returning to civilian life can be an adjustment for many veterans.

Even if they never saw battle and had mundane jobs during the duration of their service, and never even left the country, the excitement and pride of working in the military can make returning to civilian jobs seem a little dull.

For those veterans who saw battle and fought to keep their country safe, it can be even harder to come back to civilian life and leave the mindset of a soldier where it belongs.

After leaving the service, many veterans can feel adrift and disconnected, looking for some type of purpose in their life. That purpose might just be fulfilled by going to a trade school, and here’s why going to trade school is something every veteran must consider.

Many Military Jobs Can Connect You To Trades

While the popular image of a military soldier is someone who picks up a weapon to fight for their country, there are plenty of other needs that the military has. They don’t just need fighters, but also people to maintain equipment, coordinate supplies, provide mental and physical care for the troops, and even cook and play music!

The jobs you can do or can see others doing during the military service can be done in the civilian world as well, and the military actively encourages exploring a trade while you are there.

There are plenty of civilian job certifications and other educational opportunities that you can find in the military, and once you get out of the service, you can use that certification and the experience you have gained to get into a trade school and find new employment.

Many Trade Schools Respect Veterans’ Benefits

There are plenty of vocational schools that practically guarantee you jobs because most normal people are struggling through a four year college to get a job they might not even want, and this makes them perfect for veterans who want to work and want to move fast to tackling actual projects in the world.

The pay that you can get for a job that doesn’t even require a bachelor’s degree can be pretty good as well, and many trade schools give you some obligation for the veterans benefits that you will receive once you leave the military. They often honor all the benefits provided by the GI Bill, and that can help to reduce the stress of paying for a trade program yourself.

Trade Schools Are Military Friendly

Finally, many trade schools understand that the people taking them are people with careers, families, lives, and outside interests. They don’t have time to be in a classroom environment for eight hours a day, so many trade schools are able to get you the education you need on your terms.

For people who love to be on the go and still want to fit education into their schedule, going to trade school can be a really good idea. So don’t be afraid to look for a trade after you go into the military, and depending on where you are stationed and what your job is during your service, you might even find that you can go to school while inside the military, which will only make it even better whenever you get back to civilian life as you can continue going to school and reaping the benefits.
