By the Book: Rules Every Army Regular Should Know Going In

Rules Every Army Regular Should Know

May 24, 2017, by Eileen O’Shanassy – Each year, thousands of people seriously consider joining the military. This career move can be quite rewarding, especially if you prepare yourself before basic training. The Army offers lots of additional benefits like scholarships and healthcare coverage that can be a great incentive for new recruits. If this is a career you’re considering, here are some things you should know before you make the commitment to be a soldier.

Be Self-Motivated

If you’re thinking about going into the military, you’re responsible for motivating yourself when it comes to serving your country as well as daily tasks like maintaining your uniform, diet, and training. This motivation is a calling to make the sacrifices that are necessary to be an upstanding member of the military. This job takes a lot of commitment, and it’s not a good idea to simply join the military because you don’t feel you have anything better to do.

Get in Shape

Understand that you need to go to boot camp already in shape. Don’t want for this intense training to create healthier habits. This could cause you to get dropped from basic training or become overwhelmed before the training is over. You should know what the fitness requirements are, but it’s very important that you adopt the habit of working out regularly and follow a healthy diet long before you prepare for the military.

Work with a Recruiter

Call the recruiter in your area and schedule an appointment or fill out our form here for more information. It may be difficult to talk through every question you have on the phone, so try to talk with someone in your local office who can set up a time for you to meet with the recruiter in person. If you walk in without an appointment, you’ll likely be told you need to track down important documents like your birth certificate, social security card, and high school and college transcripts. If you go into the office and ask what military position you qualify for, you may be placed in a job you’re not interested in. Focus instead on your initiative. Do your homework, and don’t leave the task of finding a job for you to the recruiter. The Official military websites can be found on the DoD website and can possibly help you narrow down your choices.

Get Your Medical Records

You’ll get a medical screening from the military, but if you have prior health conditions or surgeries, you need to reveal this information right away. Provide the proper paperwork so you can receive a medical waiver if need be. To find out which ailments will disqualify you from military service, check the official website for the branch of the military you want to join. A military defense attorney suggests you always make copies of all the medical records you submit.

These are just a few things you should know before going in as an Army regular. If you prepare your mind and body for this career and lifestyle transition, chances are, the military could prove to be a rewarding and fulfilling experience for you.
