Moving Across the Country: What Military Families Should Know

MARCH 24, 2026 – Moving across the country is a common experience for military families, but that doesn’t mean it’s easy. A Permanent Change of Station (PCS) can bring excitement and new opportunities, but it also comes with logistical challenges, emotional adjustments, and tight timelines. Understanding what to expect—and how to prepare—can make all the difference. With the right strategy and support from experienced long distance movers, you can make your transition smoother and less stressful.

Understand Your PCS Orders and Benefits

The first step in any cross-country move is carefully reviewing your PCS orders. These documents outline important details such as your reporting date, authorized travel time, and moving entitlements.

Take time to understand what the military will cover, including transportation of household goods, travel reimbursements, and temporary lodging. If anything is unclear, reach out to your transportation office early to avoid confusion later.

Create a Detailed Moving Timeline

Organization is key when relocating across the country. Build a moving timeline that outlines each step of the process—from scheduling movers to packing, travel, and arrival.

Breaking tasks into manageable phases helps you stay on track and reduces last-minute stress. Include deadlines for important tasks like notifying schools, transferring medical records, and updating your address.

Decide on Your Moving Option

Military families typically have two main options: a government-managed move or a Personally Procured Move (PPM), also known as a DIY move.

While government moves handle most logistics, some families prefer the flexibility of managing their own relocation. In either case, working with professional long distance movers can provide added support, especially for complex or cross-country transitions.

Declutter Before the Move

The fewer items you bring, the easier your move will be. Before packing, go through your belongings and decide what to keep, donate, or discard.

Decluttering not only reduces the volume of items to transport but also makes unpacking faster and more manageable when you arrive at your new duty station.

Protect Important Documents and Essentials

Keep essential documents—such as orders, IDs, medical records, and financial paperwork—in a secure folder that stays with you during the move.

It’s also smart to pack a personal essentials bag with clothing, toiletries, medications, and important items you’ll need immediately upon arrival.

Prepare for Travel and Temporary Living

Cross-country moves often involve extended travel and temporary housing. Plan your route in advance, including lodging stops if you’re driving.

If your new home isn’t ready right away, research temporary housing options near your duty station. Being prepared for this transition can reduce stress and help your family adjust more comfortably.

Work With Experienced Movers

Relocating across the country involves complex logistics, from packing and transportation to delivery coordination. Partnering with reliable long distance movers can help simplify the process and ensure your belongings arrive safely.

Professional movers bring experience, efficiency, and the right equipment, allowing you to focus on your family and your new assignment instead of the details of the move.

Support Your Family Through the Transition

A cross-country move can be especially challenging for spouses and children. Open communication is essential—talk about the move, involve your family in the process, and address any concerns early.

Once you arrive, explore your new community together and establish routines to help everyone feel at home more quickly.

Final Thoughts

Moving across the country as a military family comes with unique challenges, but it also offers new beginnings. With careful planning, organization, and the support of trusted long distance movers, you can navigate your PCS move with confidence.

By staying proactive and focused, your family can turn a complex relocation into a smooth and successful transition.
