MAY 8, 2023 – It’s been years since we’ve heard anything from Grinding Gear Games about how Path of Exile Mobile is progressing.
Path of Exile Mobile is precisely that—a mobile version of the popular free-to-play ARPG. If you’re one of the two people that haven’t heard of Path of Exile before, it’s basically like Diablo, but you don’t have to fork up some cash or buy PoE currency to play it. In PoE, players must face enemies and collect loot to upgrade their character. Loot is the name of the game here, and you’ll need to accumulate a lot of it if you want to experiment with different builds.
As 2023 looms, players cannot help but think about when they will finally see some news about Path of Exile mobile. What will it be like? Will there be cross-play? How soon can we play it? Hopefully, in this article, we can answer these burning questions.
How Does Path of Exile Mobile Play?
The mobile version of Path of Exile will implement touch controls for the same gameplay as its original installment. Using a virtual D-pad on the left side to move your character and the buttons on the right side to use skills, powers, and other shortcuts is similar to how the controls work in other mobile RPGs.
In the official presentation, Grinding Gear Games stated they want PoE Mobile to be as close as possible to the OG game we already have for consoles and PC. To make the experience as pure as possible, they’ll use the same depth and theme in their systems, which includes PoE trading. However, they also explained that there will be unavoidable differences. For starters, the game’s interface will use touch controls. And since mobile gaming is catered to experience games at short bursts, Path of Exile Mobile will adapt to that by adjusting maps to the perfect length for quick-time gaming sessions.
The Benefit of GGG Developing Path of Exile Mobile
The benefit of Grinding Gear Games developing Path of Exile Mobile in-house is that you won’t experience any pay-to-win elements. Since the release of Path of Exile, the developers have been very adamant about not pumping microtransactions into their game.
Another benefit to this project is the tech GGG has developed for it. It allows the company to improve its tools, system, and engine across the board for all platforms—whether it’s for PC, mobile, or consoles. With that in mind, Grinding Gear Games’ goal is to bring Path of Exile to the mobile gaming scene without any compromises.
Will Path of Exile Mobile Have Cross-Play?
One of the main questions that players ask when it comes to PoE mobile is whether or not they’ll be able to bring their progress from the mobile version to the main game. Unfortunately, that’s impossible; Grinding Gear Games clarified that both games would have different experiences, making it impossible to enable cross-play. They’re not just making an adaptation of Path of Exile—they’re making a mobile game with an entirely different experience altogether.
When Will Path of Exile Mobile Become Playable?
Path of Exile mobile was announced four years ago at this point. It was showcased through a video of it running smoothly on a mobile device. But since then, we’ve received zilch about its launch. If you want to be one of the first people to try farming PoE currency in the game’s mobile version, Path of Exile Mobile and Path of Exile 2 will be playable at ExileCon 2023.
This year’s ExileCon marks the return of the convention after the pandemic. The tickets for the event are already on sale on Path of Exile’s official website. ExileCon 2023 will occur from July 29 to 30 in Auckland, New Zealand.
As for the release date, Chris Wilson—Grinding Gear Games’ developer and producer—assured fans in an interview in 2022 that he intends to publish Path of Exile Mobile by the end of 2023. Let’s hope that he keeps his promise.
