What to Look For When Purchasing a Rimfire Scope?

SEPTEMBER 15, 2022 – A rimfire scope is an optical gun sight explicitly designed for rimfire rifles. They are smaller and lighter than other types of scopes, making them ideal for use with lightweight guns. There are different brands and models of rimfire scopes on the market, so it’s essential to do your research before making a purchase. When purchasing a rimfire scope, there are many factors to consider. This article will outline the key features you should look for when purchasing. Read on to learn more.

Consider the size of the scope

Rimfire scopes are typically smaller than other types of scopes, and this is because rimfire rifles are typically lighter and shorter than other rifles. If you are looking for a scope to use with a lightweight gun, then a rimfire scope would be a good option. However, if you’re looking for a scope to use with a heavier gun, you may want to consider a different type of scope. The different sizes include:

  • Minor: These scopes typically have a length of fewer than 10 inches. They are ideal for use with lightweight guns.
  • Medium: These scopes typically have a length of 10 to 12 inches. They are a good option for use with both lightweight and heavy guns.
  • Large: These scopes typically have a length of more than 12 inches. They are best suited for use with heavy guns.

Consider the magnification

The magnification is the number printed on the side of the scope, such as “4×32” or “6×42”. This number indicates how many times closer the object will appear through the scope compared to the naked eye. For example, if you are looking at an object that is 200 yards away, a 4×32 scope will make it appear as if the object is only 50 yards away. The different magnifications include:

  • Low: These scopes have a magnification of 2x to 6x. They are best suited for use in close-range situations.
  • Medium: These scopes have a magnification of 8x to 10x. They are a good option for use in both close-range and long-range situations.
  • High: These scopes have a magnification of 12x or more and are best suited for long-range situations.

Determine what type of reticle you need

The reticle is the crosshair or dots you see when looking through the scope. Many types of reticles are available, so choosing one that meets your needs is vital. The different types of reticles include:

  • Crosshair: This type of reticle has a horizontal line and a vertical line that intersects in the center. Crosshair reticles are best suited for use in long-range situations.
  • Dot: This type of reticle has a small dot in the center. Dot reticles are best suited for use in close-range situations.
  • Mil-dot: This reticle has dots on the horizontal and vertical lines. Mil-dot reticles are used by military and law enforcement personnel and are best suited for use in long-range situations.

Consider the objective lens diameter

The objective lens is the large lens located at the front of the scope. The diameter of the objective lens is measured in millimeters, and the different diameters include:

  • 20mm: This is the smallest size available. Scopes with an objective lens diameter of 20mm are best suited for close-range situations.
  • 24mm: This is a good option for use in close-range and long-range situations.
  • 30mm: This is the largest size available. Scopes with an objective lens diameter of 30mm are best suited for long-range situations.

Choose a scope with an adjustable objective lens

The objective lens is the large lens located at the front of the scope. The adjustability of the objective lens allows you to focus the reticle on the target. It is a valuable feature, especially in long-range situations. Scopes with an adjustable objective lens are typically more expensive than scopes without this feature.

Consider the type of mount

The mount is the part of the scope that attaches to the gun. There are two main types of mounts:

  • Weaver mount: This type of mount has a rail that runs along the top of the scope. Weaver mounts are compatible with most guns.
  • Picatinny mount: This type of mount is similar to a Weaver mount but has a wider rail. Picatinny mounts are compatible with most guns.

Determine the size of the tube

The tube is the cylindrical part of the scope that contains the lenses. The diameter of the tube is measured in inches, and the different diameters include:

  • 1-inch: This is the smallest size available. Scopes with a 1-inch diameter tube are best suited for close-range situations.
  • 30mm: This is the largest size available. Scopes with a 30mm diameter tube are best suited for long-range situations.

Consider the type of coating on the lenses

The scope lenses are coated with a material that protects them from scratches and glare. The different types of coatings include:

  • Fully coated: This type of coating covers all of the lens surfaces. Fully coated lenses are a good option for close-range and long-range situations.
  • Multi-coated: This type of coating covers all of the lens surfaces. Multi-coated lenses are a good option for use in both close-range and long-range situations.
  • Coated: This type of coating covers only some of the lens surfaces. Coated lenses are best suited for use in close-range situations.

Compare prices and reviews before making a purchase

When you have considered all of the above factors, you can then start to compare prices and reviews. It is vital to find a scope that meets your needs and budget. You can find scopes for sale online and in stores. Online retailers such as Amazon offer a wide selection of scopes to choose from. You can also read reviews from other customers before making a purchase. Find the best 22Ir scope here.
