Top 7.62×51 M80 Ammo Options for AR-10 Shooters

JULY 20, 2026 – Do you want to sharpen your aim with your AR-15 to a fine point? Are you training for dangerous scenarios from which you hope to emerge the victor? Or are you not particularly concerned about your marksmanship with that particular rifle, and just want to blow plinking targets to kingdom come? Then you have come to the right place.

This article explains why 7.62x51mm NATO M80 is excellent ammunition for training, target shooting, and plinking with an AR-10, followed by a few recommended loads. Read the following and your future AR-10 ammo* satisfaction is nigh guaranteed!

*That’s assuming your AR-10 is chambered for 7.62×51/308 Winchester, of course. Not all AR-10s are.

What Is M80 Ammo?

M-80 firecrackers have led many a hapless frog to their premature demise.

To be sure, I’m not talking about little red explosives. I’m talking about M80 spec ammunition, which the U.S. Armed Forces issues for training and field use (specifically engaging personnel and unarmored combatants) with 7.62x51mm firearms such as M60 and M240 machine guns and M24 and M110 rifles.

M80 ammunition functions correctly in 308 Win rifles as well. Although it isn’t totally identical to the commercial variant, the 7.62×51’s virtually identical physical specifications and slightly lower chamber pressure make it safe and practical for use in all 308 Win rifles.

The M80 load’s defining feature is its projectile: a full metal jacket (FMJ; or, alternatively, a full metal jacket boat tail; FMJBT) projectile, which typically weighs 147 grains (but which may weigh anywhere between 146 and 150 grains). When fired from a 22” barrel, its muzzle velocity equals a supersonic ~2,800 fps (muzzle energy: 2,559 ft lbs).

Is M80 Ammo Good for Hunting or Home Defense?

Many would contend that using 7.62×51 ammo (and, by extension, 308 Win ammunition) is too powerful for home defense (owing to its strong recoil, resultantly sharp muzzle rise, and significant risk of over-penetration that could jeopardize innocent bystanders). These aren’t issues as far as hunting is concerned, although M80 ammo is less than ideal for that application as well.

Among other things, the Hague Conventions of 1899 and 1907 place a “prohibition on the use of bullets that expand or flatten easily in the human body” (for humanitarian reasons). The U.S. abides by those conventions, and accordingly does not issue ammunition loaded with soft point (SP) or hollow point (HP) bullets.*

You would ideally defend or hunt using expanding projectiles. They inflict greater trauma to the target, and have a higher likelihood of anchoring themselves inside the same. That latter advantage is especially beneficial if you are defending yourself in a densely populated area.

Does that mean the M80 is ineffective at hunting or defense? Hardly! The U.S. Armed Forces doesn’t issue it for combat because it blows gentle kisses at its target. When an M80’s 149.7 grain FMJ strikes ordnance gelatin (which is approximately as dense as swine flesh) at a velocity of 2,828 fps, it is reasonable to expect approximately the same terminal ballistics illustrated on page 63 of this article:

  1. Penetrates ~7”;
  2. Begins exerting energy laterally in such a fashion that inflicts wider permanent and temporary wound cavities until than the bullet’s .308” diameter can account for (until ~15” and ~22”, respectively); and finally
  3. Continues penetrating to a depth of ~25”.

Note that the M80 FMJ’s terminal ballistics do not include terminal expansion or fragmentation, even when it strikes ordnance gel at muzzle velocity. For that reason alone, its terminal performance is less than ideal for neutralizing a threat or harvesting a whitetail. Neither one of those would be especially pleased about getting shot (to say the least), although you would do well to choose specialized law enforcement or hunting ammo (which, in addition to bullets that expand/flatten, are generally loaded with stricter attention to uniformity).

*With key exceptions: hollow point boat tail (HPBT) and open tip match (OTM) bullets, which are (A) not designed to expand as they penetrate flesh, and (B) only have nose cavities as a byproduct of a manufacturing process that yields exceptionally streamlined and rotationally stable projectiles.

What Kind of Ballistic Performance Does M80 Ammo Offer?

It’s impossible to predict what a cartridge will do with total certainty. Manufacturing variances mean that no two rounds are ever truly identical. Different rifles produce different results, as do barrels of varying length (longer tubes tend to impart higher muzzle velocity, as they grant exploding propellant more time to push against the projectile). Altitude and atmospheric conditions also affect ballistic performance. Naturally, the shooter’s own marksmanship has the greatest influence over performance.

That being said, it is reasonable to expect the following from a 7.62×51 M80 147 grain FMJBT (0.389 G1 BC) cartridge when its bullet attains 2,800 fps muzzle velocity out of a 24” barrel:

Range (yds)Velocity (fps)Energy (ft lbs)Elevation (in)
028002559-1.5
100257221604.6
200235618135.5
300215115100.0
40019551248-13.0
50017721025-35.1
6001601837-68.3

Which M80 Ammo Should You Buy?

Many manufacturers produce great “vanilla” 7.62×51 target ammunition. I won’t bore you to tears with an exhaustive list of each and every one. Instead, consider my top recommendations. In the (unlikely) event you can’t find any of them for sale, then anything else by a reputable domestic or foreign company ought to take good care of your upcoming range day!

Winchester USA 7.62×51 Ammo

  • SKU – Q3130 (147 grain); WM80 (149 grain)

Winchester currently manages the Lake City Army Ammunition Plant (LCAAP) on behalf of the U.S. government. It is Uncle Sam’s largest ammunition factory, which produces millions of rounds daily.

Much of those rounds are 7.62×51, which makes Winchester’s USA series ammo practically (albeit not totally) identical to the very same M80 issued by our Armed Forces. Reliable ignition. Consistent accuracy. Premium components, including virgin reloadable brass and noncorrosive Boxer primers. Winchester USA (and every other cartridge recommended in this article) offers them all, and for a price that doesn’t prohibit high-volume range training.

Igman M80 7.62×51 Ammo

Since its foundation in 1950, Igman has grown to become a major exporter of military-grade ammunition. Located in the nation of Bosnia and Herzegovina (formerly Yugoslavia), Igman now ships the goods to five continents!

“Igman” sounds foreign (and most certainly is), but they don’t employ the same kinds of techniques to cheapen their ammo as many notable Russian manufacturers. Their M80 ammo is accordingly loaded with brass cases, Boxer primers, and 149 grain FMJs that contain no steel and are incapable of attracting a magnet.

PMC X-TAC 7.62×51 Ammo

  • SKU – 7.62X

South Korea is not a member of NATO (which makes sense, because it is just about as far from the North Atlantic as it’s possible for a country to be). They are a key ally to the U.S. and several other Western nations, however, which is why the country’s largest small arms ammunition manufacturer produces many of the same cartridges our own troops would implement during warfare.

PMC’s X-TAC label M80 ammo is essentially the same materiel the Republic of Korea Army issues for use in their S&T Motiv K16 machine guns and S&T Motiv K14 rifles. It is very solidly built ammo, exclusively featuring components made by a subsidiary of one of the world’s largest nonferrous metal fabricators.

Prvi Partizan 7.62×51 M80 Battle Pack

Serbia’s largest ammunition manufacturer is globally regarded as one of the best. Like every other manufacturer mentioned in this article, they do not load M80 projectiles that can attract a magnet. That makes Prvi Partizan’s tried-and-true 7.62×51 a great ally if you’re training at a range that forbids bullets which contain steel.

Magtech 7.62×51 M80 Ammo

  • SKU – 762A (unlinked); 762A-LK (linked)

Magtech is headquartered in Brazil. It is the commercial manufacturing arm of Companhia Brasileira de Cartuchos (CBC), which is one of the largest ammunition manufacturers on the face of the earth. They supply undisclosed quantities of ammunition to militaries and law enforcement agencies worldwide. I’ve yet to encounter an issue with Magtech’s M80 that couldn’t be attributed to my own firearms (or lack of skill).

The Takeaway

Winchester. Igman. PMC. Prvi Partizan. Magtech. In no particular order, those are my favorite manufacturers of 7.62x51mm NATO M80 ammunition. Conveniently, their M80 is freely available for purchase from fine ammunition retailers across the country (including our own).
