MARCH 31, 2015, SAN ANTONIO, Texas (NNS) – Students at Naval Technical Training Center (NTTC) Lackland were challenged to consider how sexual assault hurts one, but affects all at Joint Base San Antonio March 24.
The training kicked-off days before Sexual Assault Awareness Month begins on April 1. This year’s theme “Hurts One, Affects All” conveys the message that sexual assault not only affects the victim; but also affects any bystanders, and ultimately, the entire unit of the victim.
Session leader Mike Domitrz, founder of the Date Safe Project and facilitator for the “Can I Kiss You” project, started his organization after living through the rape of his older sister. His goal is to provide people with usable tools so they can make positive behavioral changes.
According to Domitrz, the average person does not relate to the importance of needing permission before engaging in an intimate act. Many individuals do not realize they base current dating practices on standards of disrespect.
“The presentation was great! Many people do not have the natural ability to talk to someone, ask them a question and not be scared of rejection. They avoid those things at all costs which could cause problems later on,” stated Seaman Christina Avila, a Master-at-Arms (MA) “A” School student.
“I now have examples of how to interact and deal with certain situations and know that it is okay to say no,” stated Seaman Recruit David Young who is also attending MA “A” school.
Domitrz travels around the world presenting the “Can I Kiss You” training to military members of all branches, as well as students ranging from grade school to college. The lessons are designed to increase awareness and reduce sexual assault.
The Center for Security Forces is the parent command for NTTC Lackland. The Center provides specialized training to more than 28,000 students each year. It has 14 training locations across the U.S. and around the world where training breeds confidence.
