Space Force Selects Agent for Golden Dome

JULY 31, The U.S. Space Force has selected Johns Hopkins University’s Applied Physics Laboratory to serve as technical direction agent for the Space Force’s Space-Based Interceptor program.

In support of Golden Dome for America, the program is developing a proliferated Low-Earth Orbit constellation of interceptors capable of boost, midcourse and glide phase engagements, to advance homeland defense, deterrence and ensure U.S. space operations remain resilient, responsive and informed. As technical direction agent, Johns Hopkins University’s Applied Physics Laboratory serves as an independent, conflict-free advisor to ensure system-architecture consistency across industry partners. The Space-Based Interceptor program is structured around a prize-based acquisition model – a coordinated approach in which commercial companies invest early and compete for additional funding at designated development milestones.

Johns Hopkins University’s Applied Physics Laboratory will help define and manage the technical interface documents that link the system’s segments, ranging from fire-control and ground elements to the constellation of interceptors in space, and ensure a synergistic interface between program participants so that the government can make informed, data-driven decisions.

“This is another great example of our ongoing strong partnership with APL and highlights the critical nature of University Affiliated Research Centers and Federally Funded Research and Development Centers to the success of these vital space programs” said Col. Bryon McClain, acting Portfolio Acquisition Executive for Space Combat Power.

The USSF Space-Based Interceptor program office is located within Space Systems Command at Redstone Arsenal in Huntsville, Ala.

No additional information will be available at this time due to operational security requirements regarding the program.
