Posthumous Purple Heart Awarded to Veteran

AUGUST 17, 2026 — More than seven decades after he was wounded on a Korean battlefield, U.S. Army Cpl. Daniel A. Caballero was formally awarded the Purple Heart during a ceremony Aug. 11, bringing long-overdue recognition to a Soldier whose service spanned front-line combat, medical recovery and one of the war’s most solemn missions.

Caballero, born Feb. 20, 1931, was drafted into the Army in July 1952 at age 21. According to his service timeline, he trained as a “light weapons assault crewman and infantry leader” and deployed to Korea with the 10th Engineer Combat Battalion, 3rd Infantry Division, during the Third Korean Winter campaign. He and his unit fought through an intense period of positional warfare just before the armistice.

On June 4, 1953, Caballero was wounded when enemy artillery struck his position in the Iron Triangle. The blast left significant wounds to his back and leg, requiring evacuation to Japan, where he underwent extensive treatment, including a skin graft.

Despite his injuries, Caballero continued serving overseas until June 1954. During his recovery, he assisted medical staff caring for other wounded Soldiers and later was assigned to the American Graves Registration Service Group, the 8204th Army Unit at Camp Kokura, Japan. The unit prepared remains of deceased Soldiers for return to the United States, a mission described as “one of the war’s most solemn.”

During the ceremony, representatives from Sen. John Cornyn’s office, the MEDCoE command, the 323rd Army Band and the Sergeant Audie Murphy Club joined the Caballero family to witness the long-awaited recognition.

Maj. Gen. Anthony McQueen, U.S. Army Medical Center of Excellence commanding general and Joint Base San Antonio senior Army element commander, highlighted the broader context of the Korean War, often referred to as “the Forgotten War,” and the toll it took on American forces. Nearly 1.8 million Americans served. Of those, more than 100,000 were wounded and 36,000 were killed.

“Behind every number was a Soldier or a servicemember. Behind every Soldier was family. Behind every casualty was a story of courage, sacrifice and a life forever changed,” McQueen said.

Caballero’s service earned him the Korean Service Medal with two bronze service stars for the Third Korean Winter and Korea Summer–Fall 1953 campaigns, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal and the Good Conduct Medal. He separated from the Army in June 1954, later working at Kelly Air Force Base and raising five children with his wife, Bertha. He died April 11, 2026, at age 95.

On June 11, 2026, the Army officially recognized his wartime wounds with the Purple Heart.

“You served with honor and courage. You sacrificed for our nation. And you will not be forgotten,” McQueen said.

The event closed with a tribute to Caballero’s legacy and an official presentation of the Purple Heart to his children.

For the Caballero family, the Purple Heart serves not only as a correction of the historical record but as a lasting symbol of their father’s courage, resilience and devotion to duty. More than 70 years after he was wounded on a Korean hillside, the Army affirmed what his loved ones had always known, and his memory will remain a part of the nation he helped defend.

How to Translate Your Military Experience into a Winning Civilian Career

AUGUST 6, 2026 – For service members in transition and veterans building civilian careers, the hardest part often isn’t the work itself, it’s explaining it.
