New Drone Capabilities Arrive for Marines

MAY 6, 2025 – U.S. service members tested the newly authorized Neros Archer drone during a showcase at Range 220, Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center, Twentynine Palms, California, March 12, 2025.

The Neros Archer drone is a first person view platform built to deliver modular warheads on the Blue Unmanned Aerial System list that is authorized for official Department of Defense use. The small UAS demonstration provided joint service members the opportunity to explore the Neros Archer’s controls and capabilities.

“This event is a demonstration to the fleet and joint services of the UAS that has recently become available for DoD use,” said U.S. Marine Corps Maj. Steven Atkinson, exercise planner with Marine Aircraft Group 39, 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing, I Marine Expeditionary Force.

According to Atkinson, MCAGCC offers the ability to use and demonstrate the drone’s long-range capabilities that the UAS must be able to reach. Operating at a speed of over 90 mph, the Neros Archer is able to reach 20 km with a 5lb payload.

“The Archer successfully conducted a long-range ground strike at over 20 kilometers and air interception mission at 10 km, integrating real-time video and position data,” said Atkinson

The Combat Center is uniquely positioned to support large scale Marine Air Ground Task Force training due to the installation’s expansive training areas. The Combat Center is the largest installation in the Marine Corps, with a landmass that spans approximately 1,190 square miles with associated special use air space.

“The UAS offers a low-cost, scalable Unmanned Aerial Vehicle that has been proven highly effective in recent conflicts,” stated Atkinson. “This piece of technology allows us to keep pace with our adversaries while also giving our warfighters a tactical advantage with the latest technology.”

As the Neros Archer drone continues to evolve, its integration into the Marine Corps marks a pivotal moment in the way the military approaches modern warfare.

“One of the first units to receive the drone will be 3rd Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion,” stated Atkinson.

Atkinson went on to mention that 3rd LAR will be one of the first to utilize this drone due to their previous experience and training with the equipment.

The ability to deploy cutting-edge, modular technology enhances the flexibility and effectiveness of U.S. forces, ensuring they remain ahead of emerging threats. With its combination of scalability, and precision, the Neros Archer is poised to become an invaluable asset for Marines, potentially influencing the future of military operations in ways that were once unimaginable.

As technology continues to advance, the Marine Corps remains committed to staying at the forefront, adapting to new challenges and maintaining its tactical edge in an ever-changing global landscape.
