Knowing your Law Path and Options: 5 Careers to Pursue with a Criminology Degree

July 24, 2015, by Rachelle Wilber – Criminology is one of the fastest growing, most popular degrees among not just service men and women, but anyone in general. This is because criminology is a social science degree that offers plenty of career options after completion of school. Criminology degree holders don’t all go into working in law enforcement, but many move into different fields, such as law or government. Below introduces five different career paths you can take with a criminology degree, all of which are great for talents that have military backgrounds.

Correctional Officers

Working in the field of corrections is rewarding, yet very challenging. Many correctional officers only have a high school diploma and simply complete the required academy training. However, there are many different management positions available within a correctional institution. Having a criminology degree will ensure that supervising inmates is only the first stage in your career as you move up to a higher managerial position.

Legal Aid Assistant

According to the U.S. Dept. of Justice, of the 60 million Americans who seeks legal aid, only one in five qualifies for free legal assistance. It is an unfortunate fact that attorneys charge extremely high prices that most Americans cannot afford. Earning a criminology degree online is an affordable option that would allow you to help defend many struggling Americans.

Child Protective Services (CPS) Worker

These professionals are Social Welfare workers that are employed by State Child Welfare agencies. They are tasked with protecting children from harm, neglect, and abuse. CPS workers are required to remove children from neglectful or abusive parents or relatives. This position involves dealing with clients who usually have criminal backgrounds, violent histories and substance abuse problems. CPS workers often interact with law enforcement, addiction treatment counselors, family therapists and very hostile parents.

Gaming Surveillance Officers

These security professionals work exclusively for casinos. They use AV equipment to observe gamblers and respond to suspicious activities. They can enjoy the benefits of working for a casino while ensuring a safe environment for visitors. This is considered to be safer job with better job security than a regular security guard or armored car guard.

FBI Agent

A bachelor’s degree in Criminology is one of the most common degrees held by FBI agents. These law enforcement professionals often obtain further education and up to two years of experience before they officially become an FBI agent. The FBI plays a critical role in protecting America and FBI Agents work closely with other law enforcement agencies to protect Americans from harm and crime. A criminology degree offers plenty of unique job opportunities for individuals with military backgrounds. These are just five of the many opportunities you can explore after earning your diploma in the classroom or online.
