AUGUST 12, 2026 – The Department of the Air Force has selected Joint Base Andrews, Maryland, as the preferred location to replace the existing 26 UH-1N “Huey” helicopters with 26 HH-60W helicopters. JBA will gain 60 active duty manpower positions as part of this transition to the HH-60W.
On Aug. 27, Andrews will stand up the 5th Helicopter Squadron, the first unit on base to receive the HH-60W.
The 1st Helicopter Squadron, established in 1969, will continue to fly the UH-1N until it converts to the HH-60W mission.
Both squadrons will support Contingency Response Operations in support of the U.S. government, defense support to civil authorities and senior leadership transportation.
The current UH-1N fleet is 49 to 59 years old and lacks the speed, range, and lift capacity required to provide cost-effective, modern mission support.
The HH-60W delivers significant increases in payload capacity, maximum airspeed, and mission range to ensure the aircraft can meet tasked mission requirements.
The service anticipates full operational capability in 2030.
