NOVEMBER 13, 2025 – A U.S. Airman in a small laboratory ensures every drop of fuel meets the highest quality and safety standards.
U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. Fabian Pelayo, 378th Expeditionary Logistics Readiness Squadron fuels laboratory technician, is responsible for testing every batch of fuel across the installation.
“Fuel quality isn’t just a technical standard; it’s mission essential,” said Pelayo. “The success of every aircraft depends on clean fuel.”
Pelayo conducts comprehensive testing to ensure the safety and reliability of fuel used across the installation, from bulk fuel storage to fuel distribution. He uses methods such as particulate matter, flash point, American Petroleum Institute gravity, conductivity, free water determination, and fuel system icing inhibitor concentration testing for over 100 batches of fuel monthly.
Additionally, Pelayo also ensures adherence to environmental and safety standards.
“Every test performed ensures that the 378th AEW’s aircraft can operate at peak efficiency, sustaining the constant tempo of combat operations,” said Pelayo. “Contaminated or degraded fuel could compromise aircraft performance, delay sorties, or cause catastrophic equipment damage.”
By ensuring high standards of fuel across the installation, Pelayo directly supports the wing’s goal of conducting and sustaining combat operations.
His testing prevents contamination or degradation that could ground aircraft, delay missions, or damage equipment.
