How Veterans Can Best Manage Finances When Going Back to School

May 28, 2015, by Lizzie Weakley – When you seek an education, you’re going to want to put every ounce of effort into learning as much as you can. The goal is to improve yourself in every way, which can only occur when you grasp at every opportunity presented before you.

The problem is that students tend to have trouble managing finances. You’ll find that this problem becomes even more challenging as a veteran, as you likely have other financial responsibilities that you must balance while trying to give it your all to learn.

The good news is that there are a few things that you can do as a veteran to make managing your finances easier. Let’s explore those options.

Use Your Military Education

As someone who served in the military, you should be versed in staying strong and sticking to your goals. You can apply these concepts from your military education to your financial life.

For example, use your strength to resist spending when you need to save money. You can survive without a brand new car so you have extra funds to purchase books. You can bring lunch to school instead of eating out. You can make less stretch further as someone who already has a strong will.

Seek Financial Education

One advantage unique to you as a veteran is the ability to measure yourself. You can see your strengths and your weakness, which in turn allows you to know how and what you need to work on.

If you know that you have difficulty with finances, then you should seek education in managing your personal finances. There are many courses, books and even groups available for you to better yourself in this way.

Some resources are even specifically designed for military personnel to use. You should take advantage of them.

Use Resources Designed for Veterans

You have access to numerous programs as a veteran. This includes special types of loans, programs designed to make education more affordable, and a variety of other opportunities that civilians do not.

For example, you have access to both low-interest VA loans and the resources that accompany them. This is why taking advantage of the help that companies like Low VA Rates can provide can dramatically lower your cost of living.

Get Started On Your VA Loan!

When you lower your cost of living, you can afford more things and more quickly save your money for other goals.

Avoid Payday Loans

Knowledge is power when it comes to finances, which means knowing what types of financial decisions to avoid can make your life much easier.

Payday loans are one of the most tempting proposals for anyone, which includes veterans, who may be struggling with his or her finances. While these loans are relatively harmless when paid back immediately, their interest quickly accumulates if you make payments.

Avoid them when you can. If you find you need one, be sure that you pay it back as soon as possible.

Succeeding with Your Finances While Seeking Education

While managing your finances is difficult, it becomes even more of a challenge when you seek education. Given your unique background as a veteran and the numerous opportunities available to you, this challenge should be something that you can rise to the occasion to meet.

By taking advantage of the resources and opportunities available to you for managing your finances and making the right decisions, you’ll find that you’ll be able to manage your finances with ease while you focus on studying.
