JULY 14, 2026 — The Coast Guard hoisted a man from his sinking catamaran 23 miles offshore Kauai Sunday.
An MH-65 Dolphin helicopter crew from Coast Guard Air Station Barbers Point hoisted a man from his catamaran and brought him safely to Lihue Airport in Lihue, Kauai, where he was evaluated by EMS and released with no medical concerns.
The vessel sunk shortly after the hoist was completed with approximately 30-40 gallons of diesel fuel, two batteries, and 3-4 gallons of oil aboard.
The cause of the vessel sinking is currently under investigation.
Coast Guard Sector Honolulu watchstanders received a report at 6 p.m. Sunday that the 35-foot recreational catamaran, Alakai, was disabled and experiencing a steering casualty during its transit from Oahu to Kauai.
Watchstanders established communications with the mariner via text message, and the owner stated his vessel was flooding to where he was concerned it might sink.
Watchstanders coordinated the launch of a MH-65 Dolphin helicopter crew and HC-130 Hercules crew from Air Station Barbers Point and a 45-foot Response Boat-Medium crew from Coast Guard Station Kauai.
“It’s incredibly important for mariners to equip their vessels with the proper safety equipment,” said Cmdr. Andrew Williams, search and rescue mission coordinator. “Wearing a lifejacket can significantly reduce the risk of drowning, and reliable communication devices help mariners contact the Coast Guard in the event of an emergency.”
