MAY 23, 2025 – Department of the Air Force Safety is pleased to announce the launch of a comprehensive Motor Vehicle Awareness Survey aimed at assessing driver attitudes and behaviors on the road. This initiative is part of DAF Safety’s ongoing commitment to enhancing road safety and promoting responsible driving practices.
The survey seeks to gather valuable insights into drivers’ perceptions of safety, awareness of traffic laws and attitudes toward various driving behaviors. By collecting data directly from Airmen, Guardians and DoD civilians, DAF Safety aims to identify key areas for improvement and develop targeted strategies to reduce accidents and promote safer driving environments.
Motor vehicle related mishaps are the leading cause of preventable deaths within the Department of the Air Force. Between FY2015 and FY2024, the DAF lost 274 members to traffic fatalities. The leading factors in these traffic fatalities are driving under the influence, excessive speed and reckless driving.
“We believe that understanding driver attitudes and behaviors is crucial to developing effective safety programs,” said William “Bill” Walkowiak, chief of Occupational Safety for the Department of the Air Force. “By engaging with drivers directly, we can create initiatives that resonate with their experiences and ultimately lead to safer roads for everyone.”
DAF Safety invites all drivers to participate in this important survey. Participation is voluntary, and all responses will be kept confidential. The survey is accessible online via the Air Force Safety Center’s Air Force Combined Mishap Reduction System survey and can be completed at the participant’s convenience.
The data will be collected during the 101 Critical Days of Summer campaign, analyzed and used to -create future safety campaigns, educational materials and policy recommendations. Survey results will be included in the 101 CDS Final Report.
