MARCH 5, 2025 — Under the direction of U.S. Northern Command, additional active-duty military members will soon deploy to enhance Department of Homeland Security and Customs and Border Protection efforts to maintain security at the southern border.
Approximately 2,400 Soldiers from elements of the 2nd Stryker Brigade Combat Team (SBCT), 4th Infantry Division, from Fort Carson, Colorado will augment units already supporting the FY2025 DHS request for assistance at the border. Specific locations of the deployment will not be disclosed at this time.
Tasks carried out by 2nd SBCT will include detection and monitoring; administrative support; transportation support; warehousing and logistic support; vehicle maintenance; and engineering support. Personnel will not conduct or be involved in interdiction or deportation operations.
The 2nd SBCT provides unique military capabilities to protect and maintain the sovereignty and territorial integrity and security of the southern border, a top priority of the Department of Defense.
The last time Stryker’s provided support to the southern border mission was in 2012.
Other units set to deploy in support of the southern border mission include:
- Approximately 500 Soldiers from the 3rd Combat Aviation Brigade from Fort Stewart, Georgia will provide a general support aviation battalion to assist in the movement of personnel, equipment, and supplies; and provide aerial medical evacuation capabilities.
- The 19th Public Affairs Detachment from Fort Riley, Kansas, will provide public affairs support with visual information and media relations capabilities.
“These deployments will bring additional agility and capability to further efforts to stop the flow of illegal migrancy and drugs at the southern border,” said Gen. Gregory Guillot, Commander, United States Northern Command.
These units will bring the number of Title 10 forces along the southern border to approximately 9,000.
USNORTHCOM was named the DoD’s operational lead for the employment of U.S. military forces to carry out President Trump’s southern border Executive Orders. The combatant command continues to fill critical capabilities gaps in support of DHS and CBP.
