Best Graduate Degrees for the Military

NOVEMBER 15, 2021 – Grad school is difficult, and many Americans consider it a far-off dream. But there are certain graduate degrees that can make it easier to exist as a military service member. You might find that you have more opportunities available to you than you thought. These are some of the best graduate degrees for people in the military, as well as quick information about how to pay for your degree of choice.

Paying for a Graduate Degree
As a service member, you might be eligible for more loans than the average American. In fact, the military might cover parts of your education. You’ll have to find out what opportunities are available for you, but this is what draws many people to the military in the first place. When federal student loans won’t cover all of your costs, you might take out a loan from a private lender to finance the rest. Depending on what degree you pursue, you might be able to stay in one place while you study.

Business Administration
One of the most useful degrees you can get is an MBA. If you’re wondering what business has to do with the military, the answer is a lot, actually. No matter what branch of the military you’re part of, there’s a constant need for business analysts, logistics officers, and financial managers. You can use an MBA whether you’re an active part of the military or planning to transition back into being a civilian.

There are some universities that allow people to study remotely by taking online classes. You’ll want to make sure that your school of choice is accredited, but this option might be ideal for active-duty military members who move around a lot. When you get your MBA, you’ll learn about things like how to analyze data, how to run your own business, and how to handle accounting and inventory management. All of these skills are useful for military officers.

Cybersecurity
Over the past few decades, the military has stayed ahead of the cybersecurity curve and begun to rely on technology to an unprecedented level. That parallels the way that the general populace has integrated technology into their lives. If you pursue a master’s in cybersecurity, you’ll have vital skills used to protect classified information. You might be responsible for keeping hackers from uncovering potentially dangerous intel about US national security. Cybersecurity programs are extremely specialized. They teach you about how information is protected, how to evaluate a system for threats, and how to evolve your approach with the changing times.

Data Science
One of the most important skills in the military is the ability to translate and interpret data. This skill helps officers determine how to create tactical teams, allocate resources, and assess potential threats. If you pursue a master’s in data science, you’ll be able to interpret the data given to your team. Like with some other programs, there are universities that allow you to pursue a master’s in data science online. You’ll get a chance to become familiar with the machines used for cybersecurity without needing to worry about staying in one place.
