How to Write a Military Resume

Military Resume

June 23, 2017, by Mary Walton – So, you’ve decided to take the plunge and leave the service, possibly for good. Whatever role you performed in during your time in the military, you can safely say that you’re proud of everything you’ve done and everything you’ve achieved, but, it’s time for the next step.

Writing a military resume isn’t one of the easiest tasks in the word, especially for those who don’t claim to be natural writers. However, follow this list of tricks and tips below that can help you to create the perfect resume, showcasing who you are and why you’re perfect for the job.

What’s Your Objective?

As with any mission, you can’t perform to the best of your abilities if you don’t know what the final outcome you want to achieve is. Unfortunately, you can’t say that you’ve been in the military since there are so many possible backgrounds and skills you could have learned.

On a plain piece of paper, write down your goals, the jobs you’d love to do and what kind of career path you want to pursue. This will give you a much clearer idea when it comes to writing yours.

Answer Your Employees Questions

When your potential future employer is looking through your resume, they’re looking for skills and traits that stand out and answer the question ‘What can this person bring to my company?’. After you’ve decided what kind of job you want to follow, search online or in job centers and research what kind of skills are required for you to enter that job role.

With this information, you can then word your skills to suit that vacancy. For example, if you wanted to be a mechanic and you’ve got military experience in fixing Jeeps, car and other vehicles, this will be one of your most prioritized points.

Use Tools to Improve Your Writing Skills

One of the most common mistakes found in military resumes is the number of mistakes. In some cases, it may have even been months since you have written anything of a considerable length and this will show in your writing to your employer. To give you a helping hand, here is a list of online, readily-available tools that you can use to perfect your resume.

  • Boom Essays – The accuracy of your written work can make or break when it comes to securing a job vacancy. Use this site for feedback on your work and for advice and tips on how to proofread your work to perfection.

  • Assignment Writing Help – After you’ve read back your finished resume, you may notice there’s a lot of things you want to change. Leave it for the day and return to it and you’ll want to change at least double that. Use Essay Roo to upload your work for feedback and advice on how to edit your resume to perfection.
  • Paper Fellows – Sign up to this free online writing community where you can upload your resume and communicate with other writers to receive feedback whilst developing your grammar skills.

Make Your Resume Civvy-Friendly

Although for you some of the titles and expressions used in the military have become second nature, civilians may not understand. When referring to titles, rank, achievements, badges, training exercises or even awards, make sure you re-write or explaining each with its own description so your future employer can instantly know what you did and the result of it.
