Democracy In Action – International Military Education and Training

June 6, 2017, by Robert Everett – Maintaining peace worldwide is a typical task to attain. There are many organizations that deliberately harm the humanity just showing their illegal powers. Considering the fact, the Bureau of Political-Military Affairs, a part of United States Department of State, initiated a program, known as International Military Education and Training (IMET). This program is also referred as United States Security Assistance Program. Students from friendly and allied countries can take advantage of this course to learn new and advanced military skills.

This program offers funds to capable students to join professional programs, which are organized by U.S. military. The main purpose of the International Military program is to spread knowledge and aids so that participating countries can improve their capabilities and utilize the existing resources in a better manner.

It is a collaboration of various plans that include inviting foreign officers to join different military schools in the U.S, such as the National Defence University or the U.S. Army War College, alongside provides capital for trainers to travel foreign countries in order to offer specific and localized training.

IMET Goals

The goals of this program are:

  • Upskill future leaders
  • Offer English Language assistance for improving communication
  • Spread awareness of the US
  • Maintain healthy relationship between the militaries of other countries and the U.S. to develop deals for the future
  • Enhance ability to exchange quality information and capabilities for a joint operation
  • Dedicated to proficient army education
  • Permit other countries to utilize their national funds to obtain a minimized cost for other DoD education and training

Program Benefits

This program reveals how professional armed organizations of the United States perform. It also provides a complete idea of the processes under which the civilian are controlled.

The U.S Army program for international students also introduces the different sections of U.S. democracy including the judicial system, free speech, legislative error, equality issues, and U.S. assurance to human rights. IMET’s English-language proficiency helps students to develop a better communication standard. The students who have completed the IMET successfully, hold important management posts in the military of various African countries.

How to apply for IMET funding?

On the basis of the request from State Department, funding is assigned yearly from Congress in the annual appropriations budget.

Who Do IMET target?

IMET targets the recent and future leadership of the partner militaries through training to the mid and senior-level corps, both officer and enlisted. In some cases, civilians working within the Ministry of Defence can be trained. It currently specifically targets current and future military and civilian leadership in African nations.

What type of training is provided with IMET funding?

US military personnel attend the courses and afterward provide IMET training, funded by the 03 armed services including Defence institution building, and Professional Military Education, and officer and enlisted skills training.
