7 Secrets for Successful Military Career Transitions

Military Career Transitions

July 6, 2017, Charles Ebert – If you have got used to the military career, it does not mean that you can forget about the transition to civilian jobs. You have all the chances to start a new life as does anyone else who has decided to change the career. However, there are some things that are rather specific for the representatives of military services. We have examined the points you need to pay a special attention to and included them into our list. Hopefully, they will help you start a new career, create an effective resume, and reveal multiple opportunities.

If you feel that you have no idea how to create your CV, veteran resume writing services will always help you with that. There is nothing easier than to order these services and get a perfect resume without much effort. Now, let’s move on to our list of useful tips.

Visit TAP Workshops

The first thing every former military officer should do is start attending TAP workshops. TAP stands for Transition Assistance Program and it has been specifically created for the militaries who want to make the first steps in civilian life.

With the help of these services, you will get all necessary information, tools, and assistance in finding a job. By visiting multiple training sessions, you will catch the idea of how you should act to create a proper resume and whether you need to receive an education to get the position that you like most of all. Additionally, you will get an understanding of how to start your own business after quitting military service if you wish to do so.

Define Your Skills

Before you start to look for a new job, you need to understand what military skills you can transfer to your civilian career. It may seem to be a little bit difficult at first as you do not actually understand how the military service can be related to civilian life, but when you catch the idea, you can easily do that.

For example, if your military responsibilities included training a huge number of people, you can state that leadership, team management, training preparation, and conducting of training sessions are your skills. Apply different types of skills you developed as a military person to the civil life and you will be able to define them.

Find Employees Who Prefer Former Military Personnel

Although it may seem to be rather unexpected, the truth is, there are many companies that prefer to hire former military personnel rather than civilians. However, to find such companies, you need to make some effort. For example, you may ask your friends who have retired from military service about how they found their new jobs.

Quick tip: check the career options in Procter and Gamble corporation. This company is one of those that provide multiple opportunities for former military personnel.

Create Your Resume

Of course, you can’t expect to find a job if you have no resume. Thus, you need to make sure that you’ve composed it in a proper way. Here is a thing, when a military person tries to create a CV, they find it rather challenging and do not even understand what should be added and what is better to avoid. Luckily, there are plenty of reliable resume writing services that can help.

Check the Language

If you still decide to write a CV on your own, always mind what kind of language you use. The matter is that military slang may not be familiar to the recruiters, thus, they won’t understand what exactly your field of responsibilities was and what you have achieved.

Besides, if you use abbreviations in your resume, you need to explain all of them so that the recruiter can understand what exactly you meant.

Use Your Strong Sides

The main rule for any resume is to highlight your strong sides and the most developed professional skills and characteristics. It works for any type of candidate, the one who is a former military person and the one who has already got some experience in civilian job.

Write a Cover Letter

This is a key rule for all retired military personnel. It will be far easier for you to reach the recruiters and explain your motivation for applying for a certain position if you create a letter where you dwell upon that.

You have made the first step on the way to your new career. From now on, you are no longer a military person and can hope to find a civilian job. It goes without saying that it will require some time and effort, but sooner or later you will get what you want.
