Dental Care for Veterans: What Are My Options?

JULY 25, 2026 – As a veteran seeking dental care, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed. There are so many programs and plans available for veterans that it’s hard to know which ones you’re eligible for, and where you can access them.

Knowing how important it is to take care of your oral health, it’s important that you explore the options available to you. You can then receive the treatment you need and deserve in a timely manner.

VA Dental Insurance Program (VADIP)

The VA Dental Insurance Program (VADIP) for veterans and their family members offers discounted private dental insurance. You simply need to meet the eligibility criteria, enroll in a plan, and make an appointment with a veteran dentist in Las Vegas or another location.

To be eligible for VADIP, you must be a veteran enrolled in VA health care, or the current or surviving spouse or dependent child of a veteran or service member, and you’re enrolled in the Civilian Health and Medical Program of the VA (CHAMPVA).

When you purchase private dental insurance through VADIP as a veteran, you may receive it for a reduced cost. VADIP also covers a range of common dental procedures, including diagnostics, preventive care, dental surgery, and emergency dental care.

VA Dental Care

If you qualify for VA dental care benefits, you may be able to receive all or some of your dental care via the VA. Criteria for this program include:

  • A dental disability or condition connected to service that you receive compensation for
  • Former prisoner of war
  • 1+ service-connected disabilities rated 100% disabling
  • Unable to work, receiving disability compensation at the 100% disabling rate due to conditions related to service
  • Served on active duty for 90+ days during the Persian Gulf War era
  • Service-connected noncompensable dental condition, or a disability relating to combat injuries or service trauma
  • Dental condition linked to a service-connected health condition that’s making it worse
  • Active in 38 U.S.C. Chapter 31 Veteran Readiness and Employment program
  • A VA care recipient or scheduled for inpatient care for a health condition that a dental issue is making harder to treat
  • Signed up for care through the Homeless Veterans Dental Program
  • Receiving inpatient care in a hospital, nursing home, or supervised home-like care setting

Homeless Veterans Dental Program

If you’re a veteran enrolled in qualifying VA homeless programs, you may be able to access a one-time course of dental treatment to relieve pain, treat significant gum disease, or improve employability.

This program is sponsored by the VA Office of Dentistry and works with internal and external groups that serve homeless veterans.

One-Time Post-Separation Dental Benefit

If you’re a recently separated veteran who meets discharge and application requirements, you may be eligible for a one-time benefit of a free dental exam. You must have served in active duty for at least 90 days and apply for this free VA dental healthcare within six months of discharge.

If you received dental trauma while in active duty, you may also be eligible for lifelong dental care associated with it.

As a veteran, you have more options for your oral health than you think. If you’re unsure what you’re eligible for, discuss your needs with your local trusted dentist or reach out to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.

How to Translate Your Military Experience into a Winning Civilian Career

AUGUST 6, 2026 – For service members in transition and veterans building civilian careers, the hardest part often isn’t the work itself, it’s explaining it.
