Is Military History Your Thing? Here Are 3 Ways You Can Make it Your Profession:

MAY 6, 2015, by Meghan Belnap – History is a fascinating and multi-faceted subject to study. From the fall of the Roman Empire to the conquest of the Vikings to the struggle for an independent nation in the United States, history almost always interweaved with military action. Many aspiring historians may often wonder where their area of focus should be and many have considered military history as their specialty. But a very important question is “What kind of careers are available to a specialist in military history?” Fortunately there are many career paths in this field of study and all of them very interesting.

Careers in Government

This single largest industry that employs historians, including military historians, is government. Everyone loves a trip to the museum as it is both fun and educational. But as fun as a museum can be, they are often administered by a historian. Those who specialize in military history are often qualified to serve as museum curators. Curators specialize is cultural heritage and is responsible for the museum’s collection as well as being knowledgeable about them. Other types of government work for military historians include CIA analysts. These professionals research the ability of other governments to make war and then brief policy makers on their findings.

Those who plan on enlisting in the military as well as pursuing an educational path in military history will be relieved to know that the U.S. Army also employs these types of professionals. Historians who serve in these roles observe and record information about current military operations and actions, often in the field, for the purposes of historical preservation. This is really a hands-on career as it involved research, interviews with military members and data collection. Members of this special group of people can serve as active-duty, reserve or National Guard.

Careers in the Private Sector

For many, the private sector is often a more attractive choice to work. There are many paths to pursue for the military historian here as well. The most notable would be a consultant. Often times history writers need people with an expertise in military history to serve as researchers and editors for their books and publications. In addition to books, television and movie production companies also utilize the services of military historians in order to bring an aura of authenticity to their productions. Imagine rubbing elbows with the big Hollywood stars all while ensuring the production is as historically accurate as possible!

Education

While there are many colleges and universities that offer degrees in history, this online degree in military history offered through Norwich University is one of the most respected in the field. It provides a specialization in the military aspect of history and not just a history degree with a side of military. The program covers conflicts from ancient times through the present day and focuses on conflicts all across the globe. It’s truly one of the most comprehensive masters programs available.

A degree in military history can be both interesting and rewarding. There are many career paths to pursue in both the private and public sectors and with a degree from Norwich University, the opportunities are endless.
