Benefits of a Military ID Card

The military identification card is issued to the military member as well as his dependents, which are typically his spouse and children. Military identification cards are only issued to children over the age of 10 if they are living with the soldier. If the soldier only has partial custody, it is possible that the child will be issued a military ID at an earlier age.

There are many benefits to the military ID card. While the cards are changing to no longer include the social security number of dependents, it still has a great deal of personal information on the card, much like a driver’s license. It is important to always protect the card and not misplace it.

Identification. Of course, the main purpose of the card is to identify the military member and his dependents. The military member will also be able to use his card to access certain computer systems on post.

Access. The military ID card will be asked for when you are making purchases in the commissary, exchange or other locations on post. It may also be asked for if you are using the gym or other facilities on post. In addition, the gate guards will ask for this when you attempt to drive on post as well. If you are on post, you should always have your military ID card ready.

Insurance. Though Tricare does issue separate insurance cards if asked, most military members and dependents use their ID card to serve as their insurance card as it has the pertinent information on the card.

Discounts. Many times, the military ID card will entitle the cardholder to discounts and other benefits at retail establishments or entertainment venues. It always pays to ask about military discounts that are available.

Your military ID does generally have an expiration date but doesn’t need to be updated every time there is a change in rank.
