SEPTEMBER 11, 2026 – Service members, civilians, families and the community assigned to U.S. Army Garrison Italy gathered at Camp Ederle for a 9/11 Memorial Run, honoring the nearly 3,000 people killed during the September 11th terrorist attacks.
Hundreds of participants completed the 5 Kilometer run, which was held at Camp Ederle. The run was organized by the MWR as part of the installation’s observance of the25th anniversary of the attacks.
“Every stride we take across this country carries forth the memory of the victims of 9-11.” said Col. Vaughn Strong, Garrison Commander of USAG Italy.
The community gathered before the run for a moment of silence followed by remarks from the garrison commander. The ceremony concluded with a wreath laying ceremony to honor those lost on Sept. 11.
For many junior service members, the event provided an opportunity to reflect on a defining moment in American history and its continued impact on the Armed Forces.
“To be able to get out and build comradery, follow tradition, and be part of commemorating something so significant is really meaningful,” said Pvt. Reece Grayson, a combat engineer assigned to the 173rd airborne division.
Pvt. Reece joined the army because of his father who was serving in the Army when the 9-11 attacks occurred. Although Pvt. Reece wasn’t born until after the attacks, he understands the significance and the weight it has on American culture.
“Let every footstep be an active tribute to their courage and reminder of our solemn promise that we will never forget,” said Col. Strong
The 9/11 Memorial Run reinforced USAG Italy’s commitment to remembrance and service while connecting the Vicenza community to the legacy of those affected by the attacks.
