SEPTEMBER 11, 2026 – The solemn tolling of a bell echoed across the grounds of Camp Zama’s Yano Field.
Soldiers and community members of the U.S. Army in Japan were there, standing together in a moment of silence during the 9/11 “Workout to Remember,” hosted by U.S. Army Garrison Japan.
Braving the rain to honor, remember, and build strength, hundreds of Soldiers and community members gathered Sept. 11, at Yano Field for the U.S. Army Garrison Japan “Workout to Remember.”
Marking the 25th anniversary of the tragic events of Sept. 11, the observance highlighted physical fitness, resilience, and operational readiness. Participants completed nine workout stations—performing 11 repetitions each followed by a 2,001-step run to pay tribute to the lives lost and reflect on national strength.
Sgt. 1st Class Melissa Davila, the event organizer assigned to USAG Japan, noted that physical fitness remains an essential pillar of Army culture. She explained that integrating fitness into the observance provided a powerful platform for the community to come together, push physical limits, and honor the sacrifice and courage demonstrated on and after 9/11.
“When younger Soldiers and those who remember 9/11 firsthand complete this event side by side, it connects generations of service,” Davila said. “They may carry different memories and life experiences, but they stand shoulder-to-shoulder, carrying forward the exact same commitment to service, sacrifice, and honoring those who came before us.”
Twenty-five years have passed since that tragic day, yet we will always remember and continue to pay tribute to those who lost their lives.
