Air Force Increases Number of Mission-Capable Bombers

SEPTEMBER 9, 2026 – Air Force Global Strike Command, in a strategic partnership with Air Force Materiel Command and the Defense Logistics Agency, has launched the “North Star Readiness Campaign,” a sweeping initiative aimed at increasing the number of mission-capable B-52 Stratofortress and B-1 Lancer aircraft.

The campaign is a direct response to the strategic imperative of maintaining a ready and available U.S. bomber force for global operations. While the B-52 and B-1 are being upgraded to fly for decades longer, the B-2 Spirit will continue to be sustained for maximum combat effectiveness until the B-21 Raider is fully operational.

“The North Star Readiness Campaign is our commitment to ensuring the warfighter has the nation’s bomber force ready to go at a moment’s notice,” said Gen. S.L. Davis, commander of AFGSC. “This is a team effort. It brings together the operators at Air Force Global Strike Command, the acquisition and sustainment experts at Air Force Materiel Command, and our logistics partners at the Defense Logistics Agency to focus on one thing: operational readiness.”

“By modernizing these incredible platforms and ensuring our maintainers have the parts and support they need, we are sending a clear message to our adversaries and allies alike that the United States’ long-range penetrating strike capability is, and will remain, second to none,” Davis continued.

The partnership between AFGSC, AFMC and supply partners, including DLA, is the linchpin of the campaign, designed to break down logistical barriers and streamline the pipeline of parts, engineering support, and depot maintenance to increase the number of B-52 and B-1 aircraft flying. This collaboration aims to ensure critical sustainment functions and upgrades are implemented efficiently to maximize the combat readiness of the fleets. One example of that effort is the campaign’s daily aircraft-on-ground meetings, which bring together representatives from DLA, the supply chain enterprise, base-level logistics readiness squadrons and flight-line maintainers to identify parts delays and resolve them faster. By putting all the key stakeholders in one place, the team can remove obstacles in real time and accelerate lateral shipments that previously could take a week or more, reducing some delivery timelines to as little as two to three days.

“Air Force Materiel Command is committed to sustaining legacy fleets and improving readiness for today and tomorrow,” said Lt. Gen. Linda Hurry, commander of AFMC. “Our constant engagement with Global Strike leadership and joint logisticians has helped us reinvigorate the supply chain and return these airframes to the fleet faster after depot maintenance, increasing bomber capacity and capability. It is a privilege to support the dedicated maintainers who work tirelessly to keep these critical combat platforms flight-ready.”

The North Star Readiness Campaign unifies and accelerates a wide range of ongoing and new modernization programs, primarily managed through the Office of the Assistant Secretary of the Air Force for Acquisition and AFMC.

Matt Miller, executive director of the Logistics and Engineering directorate, AFGSC, emphasized the strategic impact of these logistical improvements.

“Strengthening the supply chain and engineering support means maintenance is faster and less complex,” said Miller. “It ensures these critical aircraft remain a credible strategic asset for decades to come.”

The NSRC also relies on tactical-level innovation from the Airmen who know these aircraft firsthand. At the local level, those efforts are already producing measurable results, from refined maintenance processes to faster movement of critical parts across the enterprise.

“The NSRC started as a concept at the strategic level, but we have also received ideas directly from the flight line,” said Chief Master Sgt. Shane Anderson, the NSRC change management lead. “For example, our Airmen built a localized playbook to optimize the phase maintenance process which drastically reduced maintenance timelines while strictly maintaining safety and security. They are the ones with the hands-on experience, and we would be remiss if we didn’t leverage their expertise to drive these improvements.”

The campaign’s B-1 sustainment efforts focus on expediting parts availability for critical structural and avionics components, while working in tandem with AFMC and DLA to streamline depot-level maintenance cycles. These targeted efforts are designed to maximize the B-1’s operational readiness, ensuring it remains a lethal and highly visible conventional global strike option. The campaign is also giving leaders more capacity to anticipate future readiness challenges before they become mission-stopping events. Since the start of the effort, the number of mission-impacting part problems, or MICAPs, has dropped from more than 450 to approximately 160, allowing teams to shift attention from immediate emergencies to high-priority backorders and emerging failure trends. For a weapon system that continues to fly combat missions nearly 50 years after its inception, that added focus is helping sustainment teams identify and address tomorrow’s problem parts instead of only reacting to today’s.

Ultimately, the NSRC is a testament to the power of collaboration and process modernization. Strategic partnerships with AFMC, DLA and commercial industry partners are critical to breaking down logistical barriers, while standardized playbooks developed by innovative Airmen actively streamline flight-line maintenance. By synchronizing these efforts and refining day-to-day processes, the campaign ensures that vital parts, resources, and engineering solutions are delivered faster and more efficiently. This unified approach provides Airmen with exactly what is needed to keep the nation’s strategic bomber fleet flight-ready and undisputed. Anytime, anywhere.
