Air Force Transitioning from Huey to Grey Wolf

SEPTEMBER 1, 2026 – Air Force Global Strike Command announced that the MH-139 Grey Wolf has officially achieved Initial Operational Capability as of August 10, ushering in a new era of modernization for AFGSC’s nuclear security operations.

This milestone marks the historic transition from the Vietnam-era UH-1N Huey, a platform that served the Air Force for more than five decades. The MH-139 Grey Wolf boasts significant capability upgrades: it is nearly 50 percent faster, can carry twice as many troops and features enhanced defensive systems. These advancements allow security forces to mobilize combat power and arrive on-site sooner than the legacy platform.

“For more than half a century, the UH-1N Huey has been a key element of our Intercontinental Ballistic Missile security, and we owe a debt of gratitude to the crews who flew and maintained it over all these years,” said Gen. S.L. Davis, commander of Air Force Global Strike Command. “Securing these missiles demands our best efforts and the MH-139 will significantly improve our capabilities.”

The integration of the Grey Wolf ensures Global Strike Command remains postured, prepared, and ready to meet any threat to the land leg of the nuclear triad.”

Speed and extended reach are vital for the 20th Air Force’s sprawling mission requirements. Navigating the approximately 33,600-square-mile area of responsibility, which spans a diverse topography of prairies, plains, and mountain ranges, demands a highly capable and resilient aircraft. The Grey Wolf was built to support missile field security across the vast and austere terrain within which our nuclear mission operates 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

As the command prepares to replace the Minuteman III ICBM with the next-generation LGM-35A Sentinel weapon system, the Grey Wolf’s capabilities are postured to support this critical modernization effort. The Sentinel program involves a comprehensive overhaul of our land-based ICBMs, and the MH-139’s speed, range, and modern command-and-control systems are crucial for securing assets during the phased transition. This helps ensure uninterrupted operations as new Sentinel sites are brought online, and Minuteman III facilities are decommissioned.

Bringing these advanced capabilities online to support the evolving nuclear enterprise was a monumental effort. The journey to IOC involved rigorous testing, conversion training, and operational milestones executed by the 582nd Helicopter Group. In January 2026, the 40th Helicopter Squadron conducted the first operational Minuteman III ICBM convoy with the MH-139, successfully escorting maintenance and armored security vehicles over 100 miles during a six-hour movement without needing to refuel.

Earlier, in January 2025, the 550th Helicopter Squadron completed the aircraft’s first Initial Operational Test and Evaluation flight.

“It has been a distinct privilege to watch the iconic Huey faithfully support our global operations throughout my entire career,” said Col. Bryant Bevan, 582nd HG commander. “However, this transition represents a critical leap forward. The advanced capabilities of the MH-139A Grey Wolf will directly empower our airborne forces with the enhanced speed, range and survivability required to decisively defend and secure the Minuteman III weapons system.”

Beyond its core convoy support and 24/7/365 emergency response tasks, the Grey Wolf’s capabilities will also be leveraged for search and rescue, disaster response and medical evacuations.
