AUGUST 7, 2026 — Fast-paced action and split-second decisions took center stage as Travis Air Force Base hosted the 2026 Air Force Gaming World Tournament, serving as the operational and logistical backbone for one of the Department of the Air Force’s premier esports competitions.
Held at the Delta Breeze Event Center, the tournament brought together Airmen from installations across the Air Force to compete in “Call of Duty” and “Rocket League.” While competitors tested their digital communication and reflexes in the virtual arena, Travis Air Force Gaming, or AFG, ambassadors worked behind the scenes to ensure the high-stakes event ran seamlessly.
Highlighting the strategic value of the program, Chief Master Sergeant of the Air Force David R. Wolfe attended the tournament to meet with competitors. During his visit, CMSAF Wolfe emphasized the Air Force’s commitment to investing in Airmen, noting how programs like AFG foster the resilience, teamwork and leadership required for the modern mission.
Making the mission a reality required a total team effort. AFG ambassadors and volunteers assigned to Travis AFB managed event logistics, coordinated transportation and set up the complex communications infrastructure needed for a professional-grade tournament.
“The Air Force Gaming World Tournament is about much more than competition,” said Tech. Sgt. Dakota Sweeney, AFG representative at Travis. “It gives Airmen an opportunity to build relationships, strengthen teamwork and communication, and connect with others across the force. Those connections reinforce what makes our service strong, where people work together toward a common goal.”
Beyond competition, AFG serves as a platform for professional development and engagement by introducing Airmen to organized esports, leadership opportunities and event management. The rapid problem-solving and cognitive agility required in competitive gaming mirror the skills needed in modern military operations, exposing participants to experiences that support both personal growth and quality of life across the force.
For many participants, the event bridged the gap between the virtual and physical worlds.
“The newer players particularly enjoyed meeting people that they play online, in person, and getting to watch the rivalries come to life,” said Tech. Sgt. Jessica R. Crawford, Department of the Air Force Esports manager at the Headquarters Air Force Services Center.
Supporting the event reflected the installation’s commitment to mission success. From coordinating equipment setup to assisting visiting competitors, Airmen worked together to deliver an event that showcased Travis’ culture of teamwork and service.
“The success of an event like this depends on teamwork at every level,” Sweeney said. “From the volunteers and ambassadors to installation support, everyone contributed to creating a positive experience for the competitors.”
