Army Corps of Engineers Continue During Shutdown

OCTOBER 3, 2025 – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Pittsburgh District is announcing that all essential services will continue during the lapse in Fiscal Year 2026 funding and all navigation facility operations will follow their existing schedules.

“We are committed to supporting all operations that are vital to the region, including navigation, water management, and if necessary, emergency operations,” said Col. Nicholas Melin, commander of the Pittsburgh District. “These missions protect the life, health, safety, and the property of the people in this region and communities across the United States.”

District-operated recreational facilities, such as campgrounds, restrooms, and visitor centers, are currently operating. We will communicate any changes to this posture if they occur.

The Pittsburgh District provides value to the nation through operations at our 22 locks and dams, 16 multi-purpose flood-control reservoirs, 328 miles of navigable waterways, 42 local flood-protection projects, and other projects designed to protect and enhance the nation’s water resources, infrastructure, and the environment.

“The Army Corps of Engineers remains fully ready to support the American people, the economy, and our region,” said Col. Melin.

Pittsburgh District’s 26,000 square miles include parts of western Pennsylvania, northern West Virginia, eastern Ohio, western Maryland and southwestern New York. The district’s additional missions include water supply, emergency response, and regulation of the Clean Water Act.

The Corps of Engineers often partners with local communities to improve water supply, sanitary sewer and stormwater infrastructure.

During disasters, the district manages the nation’s emergency power contract, which provides temporary power to downed critical infrastructure.

District personnel deploy overseas to help build, manage and administer water resource-infrastructure projects.
