Known as versatile vehicles, Helicopters or choppers are fast and agile machines that can fulfill a multitude of tasks. Regarded as one of the most technologically advanced armies in the world, the United States Military possesses a lot of powerful helicopters dedicated to their roles. These machines have a reputation and have high regards among the brave men and women who serve in the military. Due to that high esteem, movies like Black Hawk Down feature these awesome machines. Here’s a look at the choppers that the United States Military uses.
1 – Boeing AH-64E Apache Guardian
One of the most iconic assault choppers of the United States Military, the Apache strikes fear in those who dare oppose such a machine. Due to its durability and capabilities, the Apache is a staple in most U.S. military excursions. These vehicles have a wide array of weaponry, ready to be installed at a moment’s notice.
Countries such as Saudi Arabia, Taiwan, Indonesia, and South Korea also use this excellent machine as part of their fleet.
2 – MH-6 Little Bird
These light helicopters are one of the agilest in this list. Although small in size compared to most helicopters, these little birds also play varied roles such as surveillance, transport, and assault. These choppers are also part of the movie Black Hawk Down.
The film also depicts the capability of the MH-6 as it hovers and quietly moves in tight spaces. Due to its incredible agility, MH-6 Little Birds are tough to shoot down using Rocket Propelled Grenades and other explosives.
3 – Bell UH-1 Iroquois
Otherwise known as the Huey helicopter, this chopper has a single shaft turbo engine, with two blades and a tail rotor. Most of these helicopters saw action in the Vietnam war, which was essential in carrying troops in and out of war zones. The Huey proves its worth because it is highly durable, able to withstand fire from small arms from hostile combatants in the ground.
Most companies like Micro Flite use helicopter models with almost the same make as Hueys to use as tourist choppers. These choppers are also good choices for passenger and medical helicopters when they are decommissioned.
4 – Boeing CH-47
One of the largest helicopters in this list, the Chinook or the Boeing CH-47 is primarily for troop transfer, weapons, and utility placements. These machines are so strong they can even carry large trucks and small tanks. Chinooks get their name from the Native Americans known as the Chinook people. Most Chinooks are primarily for transport and do not carry any weapons.
Since these machines are for carrying valuable cargo, Chinooks are heavily plated and can withstand a lot of small ammunition.
5 – Sikorsky UH-60
Arguably the most famous chopper included in this list is the Sikorsky UH-60 or more commonly known by many people as Black Hawks. These machines are also versatile and capable of performing a lot of tasks such as assault and rescue. Perhaps their defining moment was during a heroic raid in Mogadishu, where a Black Hawk was shot down by insurgents. This true-to-life campaign was the basis behind the movie “Black Hawk Down.”
