Electronic Warfare Technical Guidance Unit Provides Advanced Warfighting Tactics, Systems Training to the Fleet

Electronic Warfare Technical Guidance Unit

SEPTEMBER 23, 2016, NORFOLK, Va. (NNS) – Sailors from Navy Information Operations Command Norfolk Electronic Warfare Technical Guidance Unit provided advanced electronic warfare (EW) and cryptologic tactics and systems training to Forward Deployed Naval Forces in Rota, Spain during two sessions held in June and July.

The purpose of the training was to familiarize tactical watchstanders with EW and cryptologic capabilities and limitations, while honing their skills in the tactical implementation of electromagnetic maneuver warfare, anti-ship missile defense, and real-time spectrum operations.

EWTGU warfare tactics instructors specialize in providing tactical unit-level EW and cryptologic training across the fleet training continuum.

“Due to the advances in adversary capabilities and today’s dynamic threat environment, it is essential we integrate EW and cryptologic and improve our tactical training while fully exercising our pre-planned response capabilities to defend against increasingly sophisticated and advanced threats,” said Cryptologic Technician (Technical) 1st Class Justa Brunot, a EWTGU electronic warfare tactics instructor. “One of our main objectives during these missions is to provide leadership and tactical watchstanders with the tools and knowledge to be successful.”

The integration of EW and cryptologic operations were a focal point of the EWTGU training, which included EW and ship signals exploitation space coordination and pre-planned responses, tactical employment of soft-kill systems, countermeasures, and spectrum operations.

“The primary line of effort across EWTGU is to ensure EW and cryptologic combat readiness for surface combatants,” said Cryptologic Technician (Technical) 1st Class Regis Lance, a EWTGU electronics warfare tactics instructor. “Our adversaries are becoming more proficient and capable of employing advanced systems technology, therefore we must improve our training across the training continuum.”

As a result of EWTGU efforts, the Navy’s EW and cryptologic warfighting proficiency is better positioned to meet the growing threats presented by our adversaries.

EWTGU’s mission is to advance fleet electronic warfare and cryptologic readiness and warfighting capabilities through fleet training and assessment in order to prepare ships to face the challenges of a dynamic threat environment and achieve mission success.

NIOC Norfolk’s mission is to advance cyber, electronic warfare and information operations warfighting capabilities for naval and joint forces. NIOC Norfolk offers tailored tactical training across the optimized fleet response plan.

U.S. Fleet Cyber Command serves as the Navy component command to U.S. Strategic Command and U.S. Cyber Command, and the Navy’s Service Cryptologic Component commander under the National Security Agency/Central Security Service. Fleet Cyber Command also reports directly to the Chief of Naval Operations as an echelon II command.

U.S. 10th Fleet is the operational arm of Fleet Cyber Command and executes its mission through a task force structure.
