Veterans Education: The 7 Best College Degrees for Our Military Men and Women

College Degrees for Our Military Men and Women

December 28, 2015, by Lizzie Weakley – Thanks to the GI Bill, America’s military members are entitled to a free college education. But it can be difficult to decide what degree to get. On one hand, it should be something that can translate into a lucrative second career if the veteran is retiring, or a promotion into a desirable field if not. But it is important to do something that is fulfilling as well. So what are the top college degrees for military men and women?

1. Cyber security

Cyber security officers are in ever greater demand in the US military right now. The increasing technological capabilities of our enemies create an increasing need for cyber protection. This is a great option for someone who has an aptitude for computers and technology.

2. Information Technology (IT)

If you are getting out of the military soon and are looking for a second career, IT might be for you. It is one of the most rapidly growing industries worldwide, so you’re virtually guaranteed a job on graduation.

3. Technical Writing

If you’re interested in literature and writing, many universities offer degrees in English with a focus in technical writing, a highly demanded skill in today’s job market.

4. Engineering

According to Forbes, the field of engineering has boomed in the past few years, with the average engineer making $42 per hour median income. If you don’t want to commit to four years at one campus, you could easily get a civil engineering online degree without having to worry about whether your military career will force you to move before the degree is finished.

5. Business

A business degree is a good multi-tasker. Pretty much every industry in existence needs people who have a good head for business, so with this on your resume your job options will be very open.

6. Kinesiology

If you love working out and staying fit, this degree might be for you. A kinesiologist can work in many fields, from personal training to coaching to physical therapy.

7. Biosciences

If you’re interested in joining the medical field as a second career, biosciences (which includes anatomy, physiology, and biology) is the perfect degree to get a well-rounded base for medical or nursing school.

It can be incredibly hard to figure out what to do in college, and having to juggle your military job with school makes things even more difficult. The degrees in this list are just a few of the best out of hundreds which are available.
