Army Ten-Miler Sells Out in Record Time

May 28, 2012

By Ms. Shaunteh D Kelly

WASHINGTON — This year the Army Ten-Miler, the third-largest 10-mile race in the world, filled its 30,000 runner field in record time. ATM officials announced that the 28th annual race shattered all previous race registration records for both the priority and general registrations.

“The race continues to gain in popularity and sells out in record time year after year,” said Jim Vandak, race director. “We are genuinely grateful to all of our loyal runners for supporting the Army’s race. They are the true spirit of the sport.”

The highly anticipated race will take place Oct. 21, starting and finishing at the Pentagon. Runners will pass national landmarks, such as the Lincoln Memorial and the Washington Monument.

Priority registration opened May 1 at 12:01 a.m. for all service members and runners who have participated in seven or more ATM races. About one-third of the total 30,000 race entries were reserved for priority registration on a first-come-first-serve basis. This year, priority registration sold out in less than 19 hours, exceeding last year’s record of three days.

The remaining two-thirds of the race entries became available to the general public on a first-come-first-serve basis two weeks later, which also sold out in record time — less than 9 hours.

ATM is continuing the online transfer program for individuals that missed the registration. Starting on June 1, the seller may find a buyer to initiate the transfer on the ATM website by filling out the form under the transfer tab “Registration.” The transfer program will conclude on Aug. 31.

Produced by the U.S. Army Military District of Washington, the race attracts more than 30,000 military and civilian runners from around the word. All race proceeds benefit the Army Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation programs that support Soldiers and their families.

OTHER EVENTS

– a two-day Health & Fitness Expo preceding the race will host more than 75 exhibitors, with an expected 35,000 visitors

– race day activities will include a “world class” race with elite athletes

– live music will be presented

– “Hooah Tents” from Army installations around the world will show military pride

– youth runs will be presented by Health Net

– interactive Army displays will give visitors a chance to be involved
