OCTOBER 23, 2026 — The Marine Corps Heritage Foundation (MCHF) is launching a fundraising campaign to support the restoration of the historic Iwo Jima monument near Marine Corps Base Quantico following extensive vandalism on October 21, 2026.
The limestone sculpture, created by renowned artist Felix de Weldon, depicts the historic flag-raising atop Mount Suribachi during the Battle of Iwo Jima on February 23, 1945. The monument is a smaller version of the iconic Marine Corps War Memorial in Arlington, Virginia, also created by de Weldon.
According to Prince William County Police, the monument sustained significant damage, including the removal of the head of one of the sculpted Marine figures and damage to other portions of the statue. Initial estimates place the damage in the hundreds of thousands of dollars.
“This monument represents far more than a historic image. It honors the courage and sacrifice of the Marines who fought at Iwo Jima and the generations who have followed in their footsteps,” said Major General James W. Lukeman, USMC (Ret), President and CEO of the Marine Corps Heritage Foundation. “The damage to this monument does not diminish the legacy it represents. That legacy endures, and we are committed to bringing together those who share our responsibility to preserve it for future generations.”
The Marine Corps Heritage Foundation is a nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving, promoting, and sharing the history, traditions, and culture of the United States Marine Corps. As the nonprofit partner supporting the National Museum of the Marine Corps, the Foundation works with donors and supporters to preserve the Corps’ legacy.
Through the Restore the Iwo Jima Memorial campaign, the Foundation is seeking contributions from Marines, veterans, families, organizations, and members of the public who wish to support the restoration effort.
The scope and cost of the restoration will be determined through appropriate assessments and coordination with responsible authorities. Funds raised will be designated to support the restoration effort, subject to applicable approvals and charitable gift requirements.
“The history represented by this monument belongs to every generation of Marines and is an important part of our nation’s story,” Lukeman added. “We invite all who value that history to join us in helping restore this lasting tribute.”
