Cleanliness Supports a Disciplined Mind

OCTOBER 28, 2026 – Military personnel are trained to be highly disciplined and to have clear and focused minds. This helps them to operate well under pressure and ensures that they can stay focused even when things are chaotic around them. One of the ways they are taught discipline is in early training when they are commanded to keep their bunks and other personal areas clean.

Cleanliness in all areas of life helps to create discipline. As an individual maintains cleanliness in their body and in their home, they develop a more disciplined mind.

Cleanliness Improves Clarity

It is a well established fact that a clean workspace or home will support focused thinking. If someone lives in a chaotic mess, they often have trouble finding things, like their car keys or wallet. They will often be distracted as well because their eyes constantly see surprising or unexpected things, which leads to a loss of attention.

When everything is in its place and is neat and orderly, the mind can focus better. The mind can perform its necessary duties more easily because it has less to take in. When everything is organized and tidy, then the eyes and brain can ignore large parts of the environment. That is because everything is where it is expected to be, so the brain has few surprises to deal with.

People who occupy cluttered spaces may suffer from higher anxiety levels caused by higher cortisol (or stress hormone) levels. If you are stressed out, then you will have trouble focusing and will have a more chaotic mind. Your thoughts will not be as clear as they should be, and you may struggle with intrusive or overly negative thoughts. Simply put, having a clean space will improve your clarity of mind.

Cleanliness Creates Good Habits

If you clean your bedroom to start off your day, you will have started strong. You will have already accomplished something important for the day, and that sense of achievement you gain will help to drive you forward throughout the day. It will be easier to keep going and stay productive, leading into good habits. People who begin their day by cleaning something, even something small, tend to have good habits that reproduce themselves daily. They are more likely to feel like they can accomplish hard tasks, and they often  feel like they have successful productive days.

On the other hand, people who start their day by doing something unproductive, like scrolling on their phones, tend to replicate that kind of behavior throughout the day as well. They may procrastinate, be lazy, and operate with very poor productivity all day long. If you endeavor to keep your space clean, then that will give you something to do all day long, as you clean up after yourself, helping you to stay motivated and constantly feeling a sense of accomplishment.

Austin military personnel who lead very busy lives may not be able to clean their homes on their own all the time. That is understandable, and a solution to that problem is to hire skilled cleaners to do that work. This may prove helpful for those times when the workload is tremendous and cleaning needs to be done.

Cleaning Gets You Back on Track

Have you ever felt unproductive and needed some help getting back into work mode? Maybe you feel overwhelmed by your current task and feel like you need a break from it, but you know if you open your phone you will end up wasting a bunch of time.

One of the best things that you can do to get your mind back on track and improve motivation is to do a little cleaning. Just pick an area that needs tidying, like your desk, your office, or even a single bookshelf, and clean it. Tidying that small area can help get you moving and motivated again.

This task gets you up out of a seated position, gets your heart pumping just a little harder, and refocuses your mind. Some people do their best thinking while they are cleaning, and that is because it provides them with a change of position, a change of environment, and a change of focus. They are doing a task that requires little brain power but also gives them a sense of accomplishment, and those two factors working together can clear their mind to help them think clearly about whatever problem they are facing.

When you find yourself stuck in a rut at work or wasting time on the phone or just not feeling like your mind can focus, then get up and clean something. You may be amazed at how helpful this small task can be for you.

Better Discipline with Better Cleaning

Whenever you feel like your discipline is lacking and needs some help, you can train yourself to be more disciplined through cleaning. How does that work? You simply set a high standard of cleanliness for yourself in every area you can, and you will see that it affects other aspects of your discipline.

For instance, if you determine to keep a clean house at all times, then as soon as you make a mess, you will clean it up. As soon as you see something out of place you will put it where it goes. This will help train your brain to be disciplined and to allow no disorder in other areas of your life. It will change the way you look at your environment so that you always want to see order and tidiness, and that develops strong discipline in the mind and in the body.

This can become a little addictive as well, and what you may discover is that building discipline in one area will make you want to be more disciplined in others. Every good habit supports other good habits, which is why cleanliness is so good for creating a disciplined, motivated, and effective individual for any type of work. Are you disciplined in the area of cleanliness or could you use some work there?
