Space-A

The Way For Army Personnel To Ride For Free

Space available travel, commonly known as Space-A, is a way for military members and their families to ride free or for a small fee.

Space-available travel is a program of travel authorized by TRANSCOM allowing authorized passengers to occupy DoD aircraft seats, which are surplus after all space-required passengers have been accommodated. Space-A travel is allowed on a non-mission interference basis only. DoD aircraft are not scheduled to accommodate Space-A passengers. No (or negligible) additional funds are expended and no additional flying hours are scheduled to support this program. In order to maintain the equity and integrity of the Space-A system, seats may not be reserved or “blocked” for use at en route stops along mission routes.

Space-A travel is a privilege (not an entitlement), which accrues to Uniformed Services members as an avenue of respite from the rigors of Uniformed Services duty. Retired Uniformed Services members are given the privilege in recognition of a career of such rigorous duty and because they are eligible for recall to active duty. The underlying criteria for extending the privilege to other categories of passengers is their support to the mission being performed by Uniformed Services members and to the enhancement of active duty Service members’ quality of life.

See regulation DoD 4515.13-R for a complete listing of eligible passengers by category.

The most important thing to remember is to be flexible. Space-A is a privilege, not an entitlement.
