The city of North Pole, where the spirit of Christmas lives year round, is located just 10 miles from Eielson. North Pole is a small friendly community with a full array of services: dining, service organizations, parks, churches and events throughout the year. This is a high cost area. The base operator's phone number is (907) 377-1110. History The 354th Fighter Wing has a long and illustrious past. Since its constitution in 1942, the unit has seen action in every major conflict in which the United States has been involved, except for the Korean Conflict. From the skies over Germany to the sands of Iraq, the 354th has performed with distinction. Originally, dubbed "Mile 26," in 1946, the area was renamed Eielson AFB after famed arctic aviation pioneer Carl Ben Eielson. Eielson AFB now boasts two flying squadrons equipped with F-16 and A-10 aircraft. Mission Eielson AFB is part of 11th AF headquartered at Elmendorf AFB. 11th AF is part of the Pacific Air Forces (PACAF), our Major Command. The 354th Fighter Wing operates, maintains, and trains combat forces in close air support and interdiction missions in support of the war plans of three operational theaters. In addition, the wing operates and maintains PACAF's largest air-to-ground bombing range complex and conducts PACAF's premier large force exercise, COPE THUNDER. Eielson supports the operations of the 168th Air Refueling Group, Alaska Air National Guard, which operates KC-135 aircraft in support of PACAF operations. The wing hosts the USAF Arctic Survival School (AETC), the Alaska ANG Search and Recovery Det 1, which operates HH-60 helicopters, and Det 460 of the AF Technical Applications Center. Eielson supports the 13th Space Warning Squadron at Clear AFS. Population Served Eielson AFB serves a large population made up of over 6,900 active duty, guard and reserve, family members, civilians, contractors, and retirees. Base Transportation Currently, there is no base transportation on this installation. Sponsorship Once your gaining organization has received confirmation of your PCS, they will assign a sponsor to you. Your sponsor should provide you with an Eielson sponsor package that has information about the local community, including housing, schools, employment, and any other information they think you will need. Your sponsor should also provide you with information about your gaining organization, including the name of your Commander and First Sergeant. Keep your sponsor informed during your PCS. If your arrival plans change, be sure to contact your sponsor. Your sponsor will be responsible for welcoming you to the base and your organization. Your sponsor will assist with pre-arrival arrangements, answer questions, meet you personally upon arrival, and ensure your move to Eielson goes smoothly and all your in-processing needs are met. Mail and packages can be forwarded no more than 60 days in advance to Eielson's Postal Service Center. Due to limited space here at the center, large packages are expectable but you will be required to appoint an individual from your unit with permission to receive your parcels. If you will be sending any packages using FedEx or the United Parcel Service, please send them to the above address and not to your new work address here at Eielson. Sending mail and packages to your work address could delay you receiving them in a timely manner upon arrival here. Temporary Quarters Reservations for temporary accommodations at the Eielson Lodging Office (Goldrush Inn) on base can be made in advance by calling (907) 377-1844 or DSN 317-377-1844. Please do not assume there will be space available for you if you do not have a reservation. We have several exercises during the summer months which coincide with our high PCS season. If you do not have a reservation you will probably not get a room. Reservations are highly encouraged to avoid having to send members off base for lodging. Make your billeting reservations as early as possible. PCS in members can stay in billeting for 30 days. Lodging can be extended for valid reasons upon approval from the unit First Sergeant. Relocation Assistance The Newcomer's briefing is held on every Tuesday throughout the month, from 0800-1230, at the Military Personnel Flight (MPF) building on the third floor. A clinic in-processing is held on the same day, from 1330-1630, at the 354th Medical Clinic. A Right Start Family Information Day is an orientation for all active duty military, government civilians, and family members that is held the 2nd Thursday of every month during the months of September-April. It is held on the 2nd and 4th Thursday of every month during the months of May-August. It is a mandatory briefing that will provide essential information regarding winter survival, safety, legal, and on and off base events and activities. Family members are encouraged to attend. The Airman and Family Readiness Center has many resources and services to help you make a successful transition to Eielson. If you need household items while awaiting your shipment of household goods, the loan closet has items available for check-out until yours arrive. Free child care is available through the Child Care for PCS program for 20 hours per child within 60 days of your arrival. Air Force Aid Society is available to assist with financial emergencies that may occur. Stop by Bldg. 2631, Monday-Thursday, 0630-1730, and Friday, 0730-1630 to see what is available to you during your move. Critical Installation Information Eielson AFB is located in interior Alaska where temperatures can range from 85 degrees in the summer to -60 degrees in extreme winter conditions. If you are driving to Eielson in the winter, your vehicle should be winterized prior to leaving your current location. You should also carry an emergency kit in each vehicle. The minimum requirement for vehicle winterization is a quality engine block heater, anti-freeze mixed to provide protection to -60 degrees, and up to 5W30 (standard) or 10W30 (synthetic) motor oil. Ensure all belts and hoses are in good condition and consider carrying spares if you are driving to Alaska. When you arrive, it is imperative you have your vehicle completely winterized. Costs for winterization can be as much as $500. A winter vehicle emergency kit should include, at a minimum: blankets, high energy source food (candy), water, flares, a candle, matches, gloves, hats, coats, signaling device (fluorescent orange), and first aid kit. Drive with caution and watch for icy roads and animals. Caribou, moose and bear are often seen on the roadside or even in the road. These animals often dart across the highway as you approach them. Firearms are not authorized in billeting, temporary living facilities or dormitories.
