October Military News Highlights
Russia: Defense Budget Has Quadrupled During Putin's Reign
According to Sky News, Russia is planning to send more strategic nuclear bombers on fly-by missions along European and American borders, prompting fears that Russia is trying to rebuild its military capabilities.
China: Rapidly Modernizing Military
The Associated Press reports that under Chinese President Hu Jintao, armed forces funding has increased to $45 billion this year, an annual 17.8 increase. The AP notes the spending has "opened new high-tech vistas" for China, including a satellite-killer missile and an advanced homegrown fighter.
Meanwhile, in the US...
An end to the Iraq quagmire can't come quick enough for the US Military, as hundreds of  billions continue to be drained in this cesspool. On October 22nd, Bush asked Congress for nearly $200 billion dollars from Congress to fund wars next year, according to the Associated Press. The request includes $5.3 billion dollars for mine-resistant vehicles (MRAPs) and $3.6 billion dollars for Iraqi refugee relief.

MilitarySpot.com comment: While Russia and China (and other potential US adversaries) continue to expand and modernize their traditional military capabilities, the US continues to spend money and allocate resources for one very specific conflict - Iraq. The MRAPs are a prime example. According to TIME, "the U.S. military is currently paying about $130,000 apiece in shipping costs to get the MRAPs (stickered at $800,000 each) to Iraq via commercial and military cargo planes. There are already nearly 500 MRAPs in Iraq, with a goal of 1,500 by year's end... The push to encase as many U.S. troops as possible in MRAPs is raising some vexing questions. Because there are so many suppliers and different designs, the Pentagon is buying 16 different kinds of MRAPs, each with its own requirements for maintenance, training and spare parts. The MRAPs, up to five times as heavy as the Humvees they are replacing, gulp a lot more fuel - fuel that gets to them inside thin-skinned tanker trucks that must travel Iraq's IED-laden roads."

US: MV-22 Ospreys Deploy to Middle East

thegunny says: "We have a squadron of V-22's on station for the next 2 months for Weapons and Tactics exercise and believe me, the capabilities these aircraft bring to the Marines is phenomenal. We also have the CH-53's and CH-46's here as well. I have been fortunate enough to have flown in all three of these machines and the V-22 outshines the other two in performance and stealth. Yeah I said stealth. You can hear a 53 and 46 long before you ever see them coming. The sound alone gets your attention to be looking for them and they aren't that hard to locate based entirely on your ears. The V-22 on the other hand is much harder to locate based on sound because it makes much less noise in the same flight pattern. It's way faster than either the 53 or 46. The 53 and 46's rotors make that characteristic flapping noise but the V-22 doesn't do that in any flight mode."  Join the discussions in our Military Forums!

Note about military payday loans: If you've been off-base recently looking for a military payday loan then you probably found yourself out of luck. Effective October 1, 2007, the Department of Defense final regulation of the Talent-Nelson amendment has imposed restrictions on certain types of consumer lending. The final regulation focused on predatory products, such as payday loans, car title loans, and tax refund anticipation loans. The most significant restriction is a 36 percent APR cap on loans to Service members and their dependents, protecting military families from excessive APR rates. This new restriction is expected to severely limit payday lenders from continuing to do business with service members and their families. Observers anticipate that payday loan companies will not be able to offer new loans or refinance current loans. This new regulation is applicable to on-line payday loan companies as well. (Pioneer Military Loans, currently offered through MilitarySpot.com, are not affected by the new restrictions as Pioneer Services has always adhered to these restrictions. If you are a current or former military payday loan user and are in need of a personal cash loan then we invite you to apply for a Pioneer Military Loan.)
