Scottsdale, Ariz.—Feb. 21, 2013—If you’re looking for exciting international travel with a charitable benefit and a patriotic flavor, Veterans to the Summit may be the challenge that changes your life.
K2 Adventures Foundation is a group of business people with an itch for adventure and a history of helping disadvantaged children and their families around the world. Now, they’ve turned their attention to military veterans who need help transitioning to civilian life. From Nov. 2-14, 2013, K2 will lead a group of military veterans, those with and without disabilities, on a trek to the summit of Mt. Kilimanjaro, Africa’s highest peak at 19,341 feet.
“It’s a sad fact that more than 18 U.S. military veterans commit suicide every day and many others turn to drugs and alcohol trying to adjust to life after the military,” said Kevin Cherilla, K2 co-founder. “We believe that Veterans to the Summit will provide an opportunity to create camaraderie and a sense of belonging among the veterans and help ease their way back to civilian life. Climbers will serve a double purpose—they also will spend several days working with children at the Mwereni Integrated School for the Blind in Moshi, Tanzania.”
K2 is seeking sponsorships from individuals, community groups and companies who want to make a difference for veterans nationwide. K2 helps veterans by providing computers, specialized equipment, training and educational programs, as well as prosthetic devices. Cherilla pointed out that Veterans to the Summit is designed to raise awareness and visibility for all military veterans.
K2 is seeking veteran participants from across the U.S. Each participant must raise $10,000 by Sept. 1 to cover airfare, the climb itself, supplies and materials, and their time serving at the orphanage. Remaining funds will be donated to the K2 Adventures Foundation so it may continue its worldwide mission.
Veterans interested in participating and sponsoring organizations who would like to contribute toward veterans making the climb, may contact K2 for details.
