SMP Offers Exciting Opportunities To Single Marines

Most Marines know about the notorious "barracks rat" sitting alone in his room, playing video games and eating stale, leftover pizza; but with the help of the Single Marine Program he could experience fun-filled events in Southern California.

The Miramar Single Marine Program organizes volunteer opportunities and recreational activities to help single Marines and geographic bachelors get involved with a variety of events in the community throughout the year.

"We look to get Marines out into the community and experience opportunities that they may not get otherwise," said Johanna Jones, the Single Marine Program coordinator.

Some of the events include a discounted trip with free transportation to Six Flags Magic Mountain on March 6 and a Mardi Gras Bash on March 24, where Marines will have an opportunity to "dunk" the commanding officers and the Sergeants Major of different units into a dunk tank.

Once per month the SMP also offers free transportation for a night out in San Diego called "Friday Night Excursions."

Marines can also volunteer to help paint a playground and auditorium and do grounds-maintenance work at a school on March 13. Another volunteer opportunity is the March of Dimes, March for Babies on April 10 and April 24 at Balboa Park to help raise funds to prevent infant mortality, prematurity and birth defects.

"The SMP has developed a demand for volunteers because the Marines have done such a great job," said Jones.

The MCAS Miramar SMP recognizes and rewards Marines who participate at an annual luncheon and gives them letters of appreciation for their help.

"The program helps build leadership and it allows Marines to get involved and give back to the community," said Cpl. Micheal D. Busby, the SMP president and ground support equipment non-commissioned officer in charge at Marine Fighter Attack Squadron 314.

Marines can contact their SMP representatives or Jones at 858-577-6283 to sign up for programs, volunteer opportunities and upcoming SMP events
