WASHINGTON (NNS) -- The assistant secretary of the Navy (Manpower and Reserve Affairs, Juan Garcia and the Naval Sea Systems Command hosted the first National Capital Region Wounded Warrior Hiring and Support Conference Feb. 2-3 in Alexandria, Va.
Juan Garcia and NAVSEA hosted more than 600 participants from the military services and federal agencies in attendance in an effort to understand the barriers wounded warriors face in seeking post-injury employment, and learn how to create more employment opportunities for them.
"Our challenge is to harness the power of our warriors," said NAVSEA Commander, Vice Adm. Kevin McCoy. "We have many organizations represented here and many talented people. But we need more than talent - we need to create a system that allows each and every warrior access to our programs and offer them the opportunity to choose to continue to pursue a career of service."
The conference provided information on best practices and policy, a networking forum, and a unique opportunity for senior military and civilian leaders to meet key individuals from warrior care agencies helping wounded warriors extend their military service to a federal career.
"This conference is a good starting point to examine how we can coordinate and network a great many excellent programs into an even more effective system to benefit some truly great Americans," said Garcia.
"The key to what we want to achieve, to successfully hire wounded warriors, is to create solid partnerships and have hard measurable goals."
"We, as a nation, have no higher obligation than to care for our wounded warriors who have sacrificed so much to serve our nation," said conference speaker, Under Secretary of the Navy Robert Work. "We have a solemn duty to ensure that when our forces go in to harm's way, there is excellent, comprehensive and sustainable assistance and support for the recovery, rehabilitation and reintegration of our wounded, ill, or injured service member and their families."
