May 24, 2016 – Timothy Jenkins of Avon, Ohio, believes we are all called to serve, and he does this not only as an officer on behalf of our country, but also as a volunteer for the World Golf Championships-Bridgestone Invitational on June 29-July 3 at the Firestone Country Club in Akron.
Major Jenkins, who volunteered on site the last four years, encountered an issue when learned he would be deployed to Kuwait in August of 2015. With a desire to continue his commitment to the tournament, he has found a way to help while overseas. Major Jenkins is serving as a WGC-Bridgestone Invitational volunteer recruiter from Kuwait and contacts potential volunteers for the event. He is able to fulfill his volunteer duties using email, text and social media.
In addition to his recruiting role, Major Jenkins is helping the tournament and Ohio-based charities through his participation in the PGA TOUR Volunteer Challenge, sponsored by Myrbetriq® (mirabegron) – a friendly “vote for me” competition designed to raise funds for charity while recognizing the talent, passion and commitment of the TOUR’s more than 100,000 tournament volunteers nationwide.
From now until 2 p.m. ET on Saturday, July 2, fans are encouraged to visit www.PGATOUR.com/Volunteers and vote for their favorite Bridgestone Invitational volunteer. At the end of the voting period, the volunteer with the most votes earns the opportunity to present a $10,000 check in his or her name to Northern Ohio Golf Charities. In addition, if the tournament surpasses 10,000 votes it earns the chance to win another $10,000 in charitable funds, and top-ranking tournaments have the ability to earn additional charitable funding based on the total number of votes earned collectively by volunteers and the tournament.
Since its inception in 1999, the PGA TOUR event in Akron has donated $25 million to charities in Northeast Ohio, a legacy Major Jenkins is proud to be a part of.
Also, in previous years, Major Jenkins has helped give back by volunteering as part of Birdies for the Brave – a national military outreach initiative proudly supported by the PGA TOUR, which is dedicated to honoring and showing appreciation to the courageous members of our U.S. Armed Forces and their families. During last year’s military appreciation ceremony at the Bridgestone Invitational, Major Jenkins had the honor of administering the oath of enlistment to 60 new Army and Air Force recruits.
“Volunteers are the backbone of PGA TOUR events and we are always looking for ways to recognize those who help us run our tournament throughout the year,” said World Golf Championships-Bridgestone Invitational Executive Director Don Padgett. “We are indebted for Major Jenkins’ service to our country, and it speaks volumes about his character and passion for giving back that Major Jenkins is continuing to positively impact the lives of those in need here in his home state of Ohio while he is on deployment overseas.”
And he’s working to arrive home in time for the tournament before starting his new job for NATO Allied Land Command in Izmir, Turkey.
