MAY 12, 2016, The Department of Homeland Security released a mission statement in response to a call for input from the men and women of DHS. These words reflect the pillars and priorities of the #OneDHS unified workforce that keeps our homeland secure.
“With honor and integrity, we will safeguard the American people, our homeland, and our values.”
The above mission statement is Department Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson’s new strategy to unite the 226,000 DHS employees, which includes more than 83,000 Coast Guard men and women.
“My hope is that our people will see it as the capstone of our Unity of Effort initiative, and our unifying mission statement for now and long after I am Secretary of Homeland Security,” Johnson said.
In March, Johnson solicited input from employees across DHS to develop a single, short, and simple mission statement that serves as the capstone of his Unity of Effort initiative, an initiative that acknowledges the unique heritage each component brings as well as the common cause that all employees share. Nearly 3,000 employees answered the call and provided thoughtful ideas and input.
“As we reviewed your suggestions, we saw a lot of similar themes: honor, integrity, service, and strength,” Johnson said. “I am impressed by the thought that went into each proposal and by the values our Department shares.”
Johnson also consulted with all three former DHS secretaries.
“If we are to succeed in our security mission, we must work together,” said Johnson. “We have many employees and many components, with many complex responsibilities. But we are one Department, and it’s the unity of our efforts that keep our homeland secure.”
